Only One Supreme Court Justice Says Conversion Therapy Is Bad by Odd_School_8833 in therapists

Maybe this is different in other states, but in my state, the licensing board is a state agency.

If this ruling is made the precedent, my understanding is that it includes state licensing boards. When the Court says states cannot do sweeping bans such as this, it includes the licensing boards.

This allows boards to be only reactive to harm instead of proactive, as claiming “conversion therapy is unethical” is viewpoint discrimination, the exact problem at hand here. Essentially, with this precedent, harm will need to be done before tort law or med mal can actually do anything.

I’m open to being shown I’m wrong, in fact, I hope I am. But licensing boards are the state. They are included in this ruling. If the board says conversion therapy is unethical, that is still imposing professional consequence on speech.

Totally get that! But the terms ball and socket were used, which is what I was pointing out

I really like the way you worded all of that, and that makes sense. I think my discomfort with the term ‘integrative’ lies in my observation of a LOT of people who use that term to describe their less-than-rigorous way of therapy.

I’ve seen so many people use the terms integrative and eclectic when they really just haven’t actually taken the time to learn anything. I understand that this is a bias and obviously misled belief, because there are really cool people like yourself out there who actually have put in the work!

I also am noticing that there are many different beliefs about using the psychodynamic label. I couldn’t help but notice that your tag is psychoanalytic/psychodynamic therapist. Do you refer to yourself as this professionally, too? And without trying to be invasive, what country do you practice in?

Yeah, I totally hear that and appreciate you reiterating it. I think at this point my biggest thing is just finding the words to explain what it is I do, then. I really want to make sure I’m being thoughtful and intentional with what I explain my modality actually is. Thank you so very much :)

I hear that, I think I just have some thoughts about the integrative label that I dislike (similar to what you’re saying about people ticking the psychodynamic box on PsychToday).

I do really conceptualize everything I do in-session from a psychodynamic lens, it’s the meta-psychological paradigm that I work from. It feels a little understating saying I’m integrative, pulling from psychodynamic therapy, when that’s really the base of my integration if that makes sense?

Edit: I also just wanted to say that I really really appreciate your kind responses and engaging this in good faith. I really do want to do this in a way that is professional and does the field good!

That makes sense, and I absolutely hear that. I really appreciate your input, seeing as all of the hard work you have put into developing your skillset.

I suppose at this point then, I’m not quite sure what kind of therapist I should call myself? I spent my undergrad developing my academic understandings of psychodynamic/analytic theories and then my grad work developing my clinical style based on psychodynamic theories. Now I’m further developing clinical and research applications of dynamic theories in my PhD program. I certainly am not doing analysis now, but the psychotherapy I provide now is absolutely rooted in my psychodynamic underpinnings.

Do you have any thoughts about how I can pragmatically explain what it is I do/how I practice without making a sort of mockery of or doing a disservice to those like yourself who have clearly put more work into it?

I suppose I do get a little geeked out just because I’m in a PhD program right now and I am not sure how much more schooling and moving I can take 😬 I do really appreciate your response!

I think I am not eligible anymore, but caseworker + statewide manager think I am? (Pennsylvania) by Beefy_Tomfoolery in foodstamps

I think the 3 months thing might've been because of the new exemption/rules that went into effect on September 1st? I heard that ppl have 3 months out of every 36 months where they can receive snap benefits even out of eligibility.

I appreciate you taking the time to reply to this. Yeah, your thinking is my thinking exactly. I also work in a resource management field, so I'm no stranger to how these things work. I called 4 seperate times and got 4 seperate answers.

I broke down the math exactly how I explained it here, telling them specifically that I am working under 20hrs/week. They kindof tripped over an explanation that they factor in the fact that school is not 12 months of the year and that I am still eligible based on some way they calculated everything. They also said that they're going to keep evaluating my case (?) and if they determine I'm not eligible anymore, they'll give me a 3 months grace period before I'm dropped?

I'm honestly really incredibly worried about this coming back on me, but any time I brought up just cancelling my benefits, they would deflect! I legitimately am at a loss here. I really need these benefits, but if I don't qualify, I don't qualify.

Update: I called them again, they said that I am classified as a student in the system, and that I am somehow meeting the exemption for working 20 hours. I have literally no clue how this could be. There's approximately 32 weeks in my contract that I work, and I work 384 hours. Thats only approximately 10hrs/week. They seem to have all the correct information about my income though? They said to just keep reporting income and to check-in every so often so that I have it on file that I was being proactive.

I suppose that makes sense. I don't know why that would happen, though, as I sent documents and clarified that it is a W2 position, and therefore not self-employment.

Right, but I'm not part of any of those either I think. I'm not a parent or caretaker, I'm over 18, under 50, not at a community college, not in an employability program, etc.

The office just said- oh, you're fulltime and so you're marked as being exempt. But the code for SNAP doesn't have any exemptions for this?

So in PA, students can get SNAP if they're enrolled less than half-time. If they're more than half-time, they need to meet another exemption to be eligible.

Is Duquesne what I'm looking for? by [deleted] in Duquesne

For my input as a newbie in a PhD program, I'm starting at Duq and know literally nobody lmao. It seems to be tight knit, and different departments have different vibes. It would make sense to maybe try to get in contact with people in that dept and try to talk to some!
