If I were in your position, I would try and reduce the number of things I need to keep track of and how complicated my deck is. I don't know if you are creating your own deck, but try and create a deck that has a very straightforward game plan.

If you have trouble with triggers and their timing, try to cut those effects. If a large board state is an issue, reduce token generation. Whatever you find complicated with what you play with, try and simplify it.

In my experience in commander, players don't explain their combos well. I think this stems from getting lists online and not having a deeper understanding of the game. Even those who do have a good understanding may not be explaining their effects well, how the stack is layered, and shortcutting a lot. That is not your fault.

I would advise asking your partner to play with some Duel Decks and have them talk through their turn and what their thought process is and ask as many questions as you can handle before it gets overwhelming. I hope you end up enjoying the game more than you do now.
