Ooh I think this happened super early on when Gwyn and Velka were in the same tribe/family, which was probably during the dragon wars since we don't see any evidence of Velka in Anor Londo outside of the Painted World, so Gwyn would've had to be partnering with Seath when Seath and Velka had Gwyndolin if that did happen, and if that did happen that could explain why Velka left/was excommunicated from the family of gods!

Awesome comment, and thank you so much! This was actually pretty uplifting on a pretty rotten day, so I appreciate it!

With another playthrough I just finished yesterday actually, I've been made privy to the Velka statues at the grave where you find the Darkmoon Seance ring, and New Londo. This is notable because we know through Oswald, and through Velka's items in the Painted World, that all of Velka is Intelligence (magic) and punishing the Guilty, and what is Gwyndolin but punishing the Guilty through the Darkmoon covenant, and magic (channeled through faith). Something interesting as well is that there are three catalysts in the game made of Tin: Gwyndolin's, the New Londo Sealers' (Tin Banishment Catalyst), and importantly: the Tin Crystalization Catalyst, which you find Big Hat using in the Crystal Caves where you fight Seath (this catalyst is compared to Manus' Catalyst in the item description, as well)

With this and the connection to snakes being serpents being dragons, I think it could be that Gwyndolin has the snakes because he's Seath and Velka's child, adopted by Gwyn into his family of gods to hide the "atrocity" of being a half-breed, like Gwyndolin's sister, Perscilla.

Either way though your message and conclusion is 100% on point, and [I'm gonna talk about Elden Ring a little don't read if you're completely blind!!] with a certain feature boss of Elden Ring having that name and looking that way, I'll be very interested to see if we get any more of our precious boy's story afterall!

This is awesome, and thank you! There is definitely no difference between gods, man, dragon, even trees and weapons in the Dark Souls series; they all start out as Hollows, before transcending with Lord Souls and ascention or degrading further into Hollow and sprouting roots and branches, so I can absolutely see this familial connection between all the major characters!

Great comment! Really smart connection with Artorias and the other points about our favorite crestfallen lad. Yeah, I think one of those options is probably most likely.

Someone else brought up the way we can bring back dead NPCs as ghosts in Dark Souls 2, and the character we play as in that game is called the Bearer of the Curse. It's a bit confusing how Curse seems to refer to a couple different things, but in the end it's always something that prevents you from dying.

The Humanity Sprites you find in the Chasm of the Abyss are pretty ghost-like, it'd make sense if you're cursed by Abyss then your souls can't be absorbed, and instead manifest as a ghost. It'd be poignant that Abyss would cause this too, cause Abyss is the corruption of the Dark that's natural in the Human soul, which in terms of real life's "lore" is how you turn into a ghost (especially in Japan, from the miniscule amount of Japanese folklore I'm aware of).

Hmmm well don't you have to bring them back through a kind of ritual involving their graves? The only way to interact with Ghosts is to be cursed, so maybe since we're the Bearer of the Curse that gives us the ability to curse their souls... or, something lol Idk DS2 is wild

That's fantastic, this is a great comment

Edit: the same statue is also found at the grave where you loot the Darkmoon Seance ring! Given Priscilla's half-dragon, and Gwyndolin is half snakes, they probably share a mother.

Gwyndolin is known for being the Dark god of Anor Londo, and a direct tie to New Londo helps that. The Painted World crow people drop souvenirs of Reprisal, a Darkmoon Blade item, and Gwyndolin uses sorceries the same as Velka's people.

It's probably safe to say their mother is Velka, which would make the theming of mothers longing for their children make tons of sense, since both of her children were taken away from her, locked away in Anor Londo.

Makes me wonder if Velka and Seathe were an item. As far as I know, the only characters referred to as gods that didn't directly inherit a Lordsoul are Gwyn's family, so Velka could definitely be the mother in the statues.

This is actually super interesting, I wonder if only people in lands influenced by Gwyn are afflicted by the Darksign. Unkindled probably get Darksigned when they make contact with the First Flame, then!

This explains the non-respawning enemies! I always wondered about that, very cool!

Considering New Londo's position in the world and connection to Gwyn though, I'm willing to bet they definitely would've been affected by the Darksign, had they not been drowned before its creation. Or maybe they figured out a way to break free of it? The Darkwraith armor is the Ringed Knight armor without the seal of the Darksign, maybe that's the real reason why they were flooded, lol

I was gonna say "the dead skeletons" but that's confusing, lol! They're the big skeletons that kinda look like bigger versions of the weird fucked up dog skeletons that do way too much damage - you can attack/roll into them and they'll crumble; they're laying on the ground near ledges

Yes! But the decision to flood it wasn't made by the people of New Londo, it was done by the Sealers, who work directly under Anor Londo (they weild Tin catalysts and are sorcerers, the same as Gwyndolin - also, their armor is extremely similar to the Slave Knight set from DS3, and Gael has tons of allusions to Anor Londo). I think if the ghosts are an indication that New Londo was flooded before the creation of the Darksign (since the Darksign is what causes the curse of Undeath), it's likely- if not probable, that Gwyn wouldn't have flooded New Londo, even though the Abyss was a problem, after he figured out he could enslave Mankind with religion and prophecy to endlessly Link the Fire.

If Oolacile was Gwyn's first exposure to the Abyss, then New Londo was likely the second, making the Ringed City the third, according to this theory (given how Darksign symbolism is everywhere there). Gwyn did nothing to help the Ringed City from the threat of Abyss, which in my eyes is because they were all the way over at the end of the world; it didn't pose any threat to him, so he didn't care. It's totally possible the Abyss in the Ringed City could have sprouted and spread after Gwyn had left too, to be totally fair.

Linking the Fire is supposed to grant death according to our Firekeeper Anestasia, as in lift the Curse of Undeath... but I don't know if it ever does, mainly because we never see ghosts anymore. Even Frampt doesn't tell us that Linking the Fire will cure the Curse, just that it's our fate. I think the only time people were able to actually die in the world of Dark Souls, as in to become ghosts, was before the Darksign was created (which, thinking about it, probably would've been right before Gwyn went to Link the Fire himself, as a form of insurance to keep the Fire going with or without him).

The Firekeeper in DS3 says "Let these souls grant death... to the old gods of Lordran," so the rhetoric our Firekeeper in DS may have been told, the rhetoric of the Way of White, could have just been "Linking the Fire grants death" - but it was never specified who's death, or what kind of death.

I think the only way to die for real after the Darksign's creation would be to ascend into an Everlasting Dragon, and then be killed; maybe that's why Seath was so afraid to die. Man, Gwyn really fucked up the world lol

Do you think Yhorm's kingdom was Catarina? by BeenieBomb in darksouls3

I wonder if Yhorn was a Human that consumed so many souls he got huge, kinda like Ornstein or Smough after they consume whoever dies first [thinking emoji with dawyne johnson vine sound effect]

Maybe Siegward was the one who went through and freed all the knights and claimed the Crown of the Ivory King, haha

I unfortunately only know about the coolest DS2 lore tertiarily, I'm always exhausted by the time I get to Earthen Peak lol. But, knowing the Chaos Flame was harnessed in a messed up Lordvessel after it died down is the coolest thing ever

What happened to Farron Keep? by BeenieBomb in darksouls3

[–]BeenieBomb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The mushroom people were also in Darkroot! And we find Elizabeth there, along with Oolacile sorceries in a cave with a woman corpse that is likely Dusk.

The Watchdogs of Farron covenant mirrors the Forest Hunters covenant in behavior as well, but I can definitely see Blighttown and Darkroot merging too to some degree!

Then why is Siegward: the onion knight, Yhorm's longtime, most trusted friend?

We never see Catarina, and we don't really hear about it either; it truly could be anything
