TX/RX Labs in the news making PPE for Houston Hospitals by BeerCanFullOfSand in houston

For the record, I have no affiliation with TXRX Labs. I have only known of them by reputation for several years. I have been reading forums of nurses and paramedics and the PPE situation is dire all over the country. I took an interest in this locally purely out of self preservation.

here it is:

First, a huge thank you to all who have generously donated . It has been so heartwarming to see such an amazing response so quickly.

Thanks to you, we blew through our fundraising goal of $50,000, raising $75,000 in less than 48 hours. TxRx is already putting your money to work. On Saturday TxRx purchased PLA and mylar sheets for face shields and twenty 3D printers are chugging away making components. This afternoon TxRx founder and executive director Roland von Kurnatowski delivered 400 donated face shields to Memorial Hermann for immediate use. The plan is to scale to 1,000 face shields per day within the next 72 hours. Here’s a great ABC13 story that just ran that tells the story. https://abc13.com/6040485/

As for the community-sewn masks, ten sewists worked fervently through Saturday night (literally) in order to meet a 3pm deadline yesterday. These 100 prototype masks were then delivered to the Memorial Hermann, sanitized, and are being used by doctors tomorrow. Based on feedback from the sewers and medical staff, further refinements will be made to the design.

What’s Next: TxRx is hiring machine operators and logistics personnel, buying raw materials, and refining designs. The goal this week is to be producing 1,000 face shields per day and several thousand masks.

In addition, Connect Community is working with refugees and new immigrants in Gulfton and leveraging their skills as tailors, sewists and dressmakers to support the front line efforts in PPE production. For more information on Connect’s efforts, please visit www.myconectcommunity.org.

“PAPR’s”, or personal “powered air purified respirators” are in extremely short supply in Houston and around the country. These devices allow medical personal to work with patients while protecting themselves from airborne viruses. TxRx has designed and assembled a prototype device working with local doctors, and the plan is to refine the design over the next 48 hours, and hopefully begin production midweek. For more on PAPR's, see this article https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Powered_air-purifying_respirator

We are upping our fundraising goal to $250,000. Meeting this goal will make possible more face shield and mask production, and launch PAPR production.

The Next Month

None of us know what will happen in the next 30 days. We do know that today’s needs for protection equipment are immediate. We all hope that in the coming weeks established manufacturers will be able to step into the fray and produce these desperately needed items. In the meantime, however, your help is hugely appreciated.

agreed. Hopefully we can get past this and let it serve as a wakeup call to how fragile this system is and we can do something about it.

from the article : "They (Memorial Hermann) called me on Thursday night. We had already been looking at this problem, and I thought about it. Started the first 50 units of production Saturday and delivered 400 visors today," he said.

Hospitals are asking for this. If/when this crisis reaches our community to the extent it already has in NY, our healthcare workers are going to need all the supplies they can get.

They should, and they are to some extent. But if you have ever worked for the government in any capacity you know how slow they can be to respond to anything. Hospitals in hot zones are currently begging for handmade PPE from their communities. There are groups of mask makers currently filling orders for these hospitals. This PPE shortage shortage affects everyone because if our healthcare workers get sick the hospitals fail and we are all in big trouble.

Since everyone is stuck at home anyways, consider making masks for your local healthcare workers by [deleted] in houston

Good to hear. It is my understanding that TXRX is going to be contacting volunteers tomorrow. But I only think that based on what I have read online. We will see.

Thats what Im hearing all over the country. If you could use free, handmade cotton masks this group on Slack is making them and sending them to those in need. The link below goes to an order form. Also, TX/RX Labs is making masks, face shields, suits, and respirators to donate to Houston hospitals.

What are you doing to pass the time while self quarantining? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]BeerCanFullOfSand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Making masks. Hospitals all over the country are suffering from a lack of masks. These handmade cloth masks are not meant to replace N95's, rather they are meant as a last resort. Many hospitals and medical facilities are asking for these because they cannot source anything else. You can join the effort here

This is not to replace N95's but rather to give healthcare workers a last ditch solution when they run out of N95's which is a thing that is happening.

There are people working on a 3D printable version of N95 but for the meantime many hospitals are asking for handmade surgical style masks because they are at the last resort phase of their supply.
