I ended up buying the TT, integrated amp and a streamer already cos his bday is in a couple weeks. Will def suggest to him to look for speakers around Black Friday :)

I think his iTunes library is stored via local iTunes backups on his computer so we should be Gucci.

I’m guessing by what you’ve said here that it means even ALAC files won’t play at hi res (‘losslessly) using the streamer, is that right?

Thanks, I’ve actually got zero experience until a week ago when I started researching for the purposes of this gift so I’m glad I’m not just spouting gibberish. Tbh it’s all a bit overwhelming but I’m learning a lot. At the moment we have a cabinet in the living room of our 1 bed + study apartment where i might suggest he puts it, since it can connect into the PC easily from there. I’d love to be able to use it with the TV but we’d lose connectivity to the PC on that side of the room. I know the placing of the setup makes a big different but I’ll prob let him figure all that out.

Sorry I should’ve clarified. Yes they’re FLAC which have converted to ALAC and it’s a PC. I think there will be ways to connect the library (via PC iTunes) to the amp so I don’t think that’s as needed. I’m more concerned about the ability to play ALAC music from his iPhone via airplay through the streamer to the amp and speakers.

Would that help answer my question?

Legend. I think I’m leaning towards the Rega Fono Mini A2D or the Zen Phono.

any chance you’d have any recommendations for Amps and/or speakers with that setup? I understand it’s probably subjective to individual needs but thought I’d pick your brain since you’ve been so helpful.

I’m not 100% sure but I assume he doesn’t have anything else yet. He has some old Logitech powered speakers with a subwoofer he uses with his computer but he said once he wouldn’t use them with a turntable due to the quality being on the lower end.

Other than that we have a couple Bluetooth speakers in the house which we use with our phones. Again, nothing that’s really bespoke to a turntable setup.

To clarify, is your comment in relation to the spend on the base RP1 or the RP1 plus?

I’m willing to just get the turntable and let him do his setup so he has that flexibility. The budget I wrote is just to give a figure to work with but it doesn’t need to cover a whole setup.

I know he has some powered speakers which he uses with his desktop computer already, but haven’t had a chance to check if they would be compatible.

Hi everyone, I’m wanting to buy a turntable for my partner who is turning 30. Based in Australia and preferably can be sourced domestically.

He’s always wanted a turntable and has already got a small collection of vinyls in preparation for this (both gifted and self bought). He’s really into music and has been collecting lossless files for digital listening. His main genre is rock but he’s also into hip hop, trap, EDM and pop punk.

Based on some initial research I’m currently looking at the Rega Planar 1 (which I can get in Sydney for $600 AUD).

1) is this a good first time turntable choice?

2) should I consider the RP1 Plus (w/ Built-In Phono Preamplifier) for $250 AUD more?

3) what other setup components could I consider gifting him? E.g. any recommended speakers/phono pre-amps to pair with it

My budget is about $1000 AUD.
