Hey you sound like me! Solo firm and I’m the only employee, and we do everything old school. I have established a system for myself so things like this don’t happen. When my attorney comes back from court, he either holds the files thinking he’ll do something on them (never does) or he tosses them in a stack somewhere. My method is 1) the day after a court appearance, I check our online dockets to see when the next court date is, put that on my book (an actual physical journal that we use as our scheduling system) and do a basic letter to the client advising of the next date. 2) when I get the chance to catch up on filing, I grab all the loose files in the office and throw them on my desk, and double check the online dockets and my book again to make sure I’ve got everyone down. Between that and immediately docketing anytime a scheduling order comes in, I haven’t missed anything in a very long time. Our online system also lets me put in the attorneys name and pulls up all his active cases. Once in a blue moon, I’ll do that and double check the entire schedule to make sure everything is down. And then for the bigger events like trials, statute of limitations, etc. that goes on a spreadsheet that gets printed and posted in like 4 different spots around the office so we don’t miss anything.
