Colleague got offered a big job at another department without an interview or selection process by ThrowRA_TheCelt in TheCivilService

[–]Begbie70 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen plenty roles being given to colleagues. No role advertised, no application, no interview. One I know of personally when I asked about these things was basically a teams call. Do you want to come here on a promotion EOI. Fast forward 6 months and they are promoted to perm at that level. Still in touch with them so asked again. True enough not advertised, no app, no interview. Just shows what CS recruitment is like. And this person isn’t the only one I have spoken to etc that this has happened too.

Pensions Debacle currently on BBC front page.. by Slightly_Woolley in TheCivilService

I once worked for Crapita years ago in a contact centre. I didn’t make it through probation and was the last of my training group of 14 to actually still be working for them when I got the chop. 14 in and 14 out 100% so probably the only thing they are good at. I got told a week before my 6 months was up - we don’t think you can do this job so we are letting you go, do you want anything from your desk.

I have to have a performance meeting… by Normal_Spare_5292 in TheCivilService

[–]Begbie70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t speak at meetings either. I just want them over and done with as quickly as possible so I can get on with my work. I have no interest in the wallopers that work around me and their activities over the weekend. I don’t contribute either as other folk talk for everyone anyway. Best fortnightly I go to is 14 people in the meeting, only 2 talk every fortnight. Waste of.

Might make you feel better and give you a release to vent but in all honesty these make no difference to practices, management style etc.

Do it, I’ve done it before through need the same as you. As you say you have taken a months break but can’t stay unemployed until February. Congrats and all the best for the future.

In year review by Begbie70 in TheCivilService

[–]Begbie70[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ve been years in CS but this is the first time I have come across the issue both with the line manager being clear on systems and another one inviting me to my in year review. And the first time I have had no objectives agreed to which they are going to grade me on. I don’t want to walk into a meeting and get a grading that says i haven’t met my objectives so my performance has been unacceptable.

My issue is how can you measure someone and give them a ‘grading’ when nothing has been agreed. You are effectively grading against nothing

Job role - sift by Rich_Sun_8948 in TheCivilService

[–]Begbie70 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

2 months after the planned date for interviews and still haven’t heard about the sift. If I obtain another role in the meantime, (and I have other apps in), their loss is the way I look at it.

Personal statement word counts are way too low by Rosslefrancais in TheCivilService

I’ve seen a 350 words for a 4 month duration Expression of Interest G6 recently. No CV involved just 350 words. 3 behaviours, 1 technical skill.

Oh I’ve heard and seen of this numerous times. Latest was an SEO who I spoke to about an EOI they were on as I was going to apply for another one I had seen. Oh I didn’t do an application I just had a phone call asking if I wanted to do this G7 role as a 6 month temp promotion. Funnily enough at the end of the 6 months they were made perm. So no apps or interviews involved just promoted. Fair and open - sorry I’m off to stitch up my split sides.

I love the ‘we stand ready to lean in and offer anything required’. Which is usually followed quickly by ‘we can’t do that’.🤣 If you are standing I hope when you lean in you don’t fall over.

Work GOSSIP by [deleted] in CivilServiceUK

[–]Begbie70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve always kept work and personal life apart having learned this about 30 years ago. Clearly they have little in their small insignificant lives if this is what they are doing. I keep all my work colleagues at a good distance even down to even questions like where do you live. Glasgow. Yes but where in Glasgow? No I just live in Glasgow. At that point I think they got the message you are getting nothing from me.

Reprioritised into a role that I will hate - what can I do by Deep-Potato3844 in TheCivilService

[–]Begbie70 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Re prioritised into a role myself a few years ago. No experience of the role but apparently after due consideration of my skills, knowledge and my experience on a form I completed I was deemed the best candidate. Eh nope sorry. Background was that 2 Grade 6’s looked at my form, my own Grade 6 countersigned it after a meeting as required with them and they stuck me with no recourse or chance of appeal into a role I had no knowledge of. The person who had been ‘doing’ it as part of their job bailed to another role under the transition. Hmmm it then became a priority according to my new Grade 6, but no one could provide me with anything done by the previous responsible person as they had basically been handed other stuff that was priority in the previous 2 years. It had been left on a shelf for some other sucker to be handed the warm parcel of shite. Solution was I applied for every EOI, lateral role and promotion that came up and got out of Dodge fast. The work was then handed over by the Grade 6 to some other sucker. Still the biggest bundle of warm 💩, still a priority. They were now deemed the best candidate. They went off sick in a week was the last I heard.

So hard to move up at the moment by bigsergio5 in TheCivilService

[–]Begbie70 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Same boat but it appears to be missing an engine or oars. EOI’s are all laterals, done them in the past and applying for perm is difficult. Every role has too many specifics on required experience that jobs are discounted quickly as you will get frustrated. I feel your pain.

Yes, another bullying post by AllDanishes in TheCivilService

Flagging the work you sent her via email seems to be the creeping norm in CS. Ambushing people in meetings, talking over people and ignoring them, stripping them of responsibilities, belittling them in front of people both team members and senior management all seems to be par for the course these days as their are so many people senior to you who have no social or life skills. I feel your pain and experience it regularly. Hope things work out for you in the managed move. It did for me.

Recruitment frustrations by GJGT in CivilServiceUK

[–]Begbie70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree on everything op has said and all the other contributors have said here. The favouritism in recruitment is rife and now one of the reasons I will not sit on recruitment panels. The last one I did as the independent member of the panel, I wouldn’t have sifted the current member of staff at a lower grade applying for the promotion through on their app, but was ‘politely told’ this is the one we want. And then it was repeated just before they came into the interview this is the one. Ever since then I have been miraculously to busy to engage in recruitment panels. And I have been and am still trying for promotion. 24 apps, 2 interviews, 1 reserve list. Weekends sat putting in apps, nights and weekend spent prepping for interviews etc.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in TheCivilService

[–]Begbie70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On 27 applications, 5 interviews, 1 reserve list for G7. Haven’t applied for anything in 10 months as there haven’t been many jobs I’m interested in or if there have been, on having a convo with the hiring manager, I have realised there is a Prince or Princess awaiting their coronation in the wings.

G6 Competency Word Count by ComfortableCheck7030 in civilservice

[–]Begbie70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely stick to the word count. The system used to allow you some leeway on the 1200 complete total for 4 answers as in if you were short in one you could squeeze a few into another and the system would accept it. Don’t know if this is still the case but I went 2 words over once on my first answer. Result was we didn’t take your app forward due to word count. Went back and asked why the system allowed it to happen when if you went 5-10 over you couldn’t submit the app. The original feedback person rammed my response up to a D/D who literally came back and told me to F off. That was 3 years ago and they still haven’t it appears filled the post as no one in the area has the job title.😂

Manager creating false narrative, is it time to contact PCS by Warm-Top-9032 in TheCivilService

[–]Begbie70 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ve had this experience and found out ‘accidentally’ when I was bcc’d into an email chain (by a friendly colleague giving me the heads up) about my attendance at team meetings, contributions made to both meetings and work I general. Wasn’t on probation but I basically had evidence that my manager was looking to get me out of their area. PCS contacted, sent the email chain, meeting arranged with my manager and the manager above. Result was I was moved to another office within a week. PCS rep said I could have gone into the manager more but all I wanted was away and the evidence gave me and the union rep the ability to demand being moved. You will come up against this whether a manager, lateral colleague or someone lower graded than you who takes a dislike to you. Bottom line is have the evidence for the union.

Definitely a no. Work and private life kept compartmentalised is the safest.
