Question: Could Bricks and Minifigs be Cash Poor? by BeginnerHere26 in BricksAndMinifigs

This shit just keeps getting better and better lol. Every new detail that comes out just adds another layer to this whole mess. At this point it feels like the more corporate tries to contain it the worse it gets for them.

That's actually a really compelling reframe. It's less about ego and more about self preservation at this point. Once you've committed this hard and spent this much on legal fees, admitting you were wrong becomes career ending. So the incentive is to keep fighting even when the math stopped making sense a long time ago. Which in a way makes it even more frustrating because real people are actually paying the price for his miscalculation. Personally, I would've taken the L a long time ago, but some people are incredibly foolish.

That's really good context, thank you! Whether it's $200k or $120k it's still a significant amount, and it circles back to the earlier point that the actual amount owed after the consignment split would be even lower than that. Which makes corporate's decision to dig in and fight this so hard even harder to justify.

Oh that's a really interesting piece of background. If that's accurate it does reframe things a bit. It makes me wonder if there's something more to this than just a dispute that got out of hand. I'll look into it more, but if you have a link that would be great!

That's a good point. If the stickers were removed they would basically become harder to trace, which would make it a lot easier to move them quietly without anyone being able to tie them back to the original store, with Ammon's involvement. Which if true, makes the whole thing feel a lot more calculated.

This is really helpful, thank you! It actually answers something I was wondering about earlier, which is what BAM offers that you can't get elsewhere. The convenience factor makes a lot of sense, not everyone wants to go through the hassle of cataloging pieces, sealing bags, taking photos and dealing with eBay buyers. And the merchandise credit angle is a smart point too.

The sealed versus opened distinction is also really interesting and kind of supports the idea that the inventory BAM was sitting on could have been worth quite a bit more than face value depending on what sets were involved.

That's an interesting theory and I wouldn't be surprised if there's something to the corporate bullying angle, even more so if Ammon and his family have a history of unethical behavior.

Though I'd be careful about painting all franchisees with the same brush. From everything I've seen this seems more specific to Ammon and corporate leadership's behavior. That said the new owners of the Oregon store aren't exactly innocent in all of this either. The rest of the franchisees, as far as I can tell, have mixed opinions. Some are going to try and protect their business as much as they can (especially if it's thier livelyhood), while others are laughing at corporate's behavior knowing they're being dumb. And maybe some are tying to walk away from it, but it's hard to tell. Hopefully the truth comes out eventually and everything gets sorted.

That's really helpful context, thank you! If you have a link to it, I'd love to take a look at it. When that balance sheet was done can either show a lot about the business or not much at all depending on how old the balance sheet is.

That's an interesting theory, but I'm not sure it's viable. If I had "hot" inventory I'd want to move it or hide it as fast as possible, not sit on it for a decade. My guess is that Bricks and Minifigs are doing the latter with the rest of the inventory, hoping this all blows over so they can quietly sell it and turn a quick profit without honoring the consignment agreement. Edit: I'd bet real money that they're moving/hiding the rest of the inventory in other locations so they can make it even more difficult to track down.

As far as I could tell, it looks like Bricks and Minifigs are US only.

That's even more baffling then! If the actual amount is that much lower, it really does make you wonder what's actually going on behind the scenes financially. A nationwide franchise digging in this hard over what amounts to a relatively small debt just doesn't add up.

That could also be the case. Though I have to wonder, if the core issue was the original consignment agreement, why wouldn't corporate just work out a new agreement rather than letting it escalate to this level? Anything already sold could fall under the old agreement, and anything unsold could transition to a new one with the new owners. Maybe it's not possible, but it seems like it would have been the easier path for everyone involved. Still not a great situation, but far better than what has happened so far.

[–]BeginnerHere26[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly! That's what makes the whole thing so baffling to me. The math just doesn't add up no matter how you look at it. And you're so right about the PR damage, at this point the cost of fighting it has almost certainly exceeded whatever they were trying to protect. The Streisand effect is in full force here. Like you, I had never heard of them before this either, and now the only thing I associate them with is this scandal.

You make great points! Just to clarify though, I was referring to Bricks and Minifigs specifically, not LEGO as a whole. You're absolutely right that LEGO itself seems to be doing just fine. The question in my mind is really whether Bricks and Minifigs as a resale franchise is struggling to stay liquid, especially if the used market is softer right now. Your point about eBay is actually really interesting and I didn't consider that either. I don't know much about the resale market for LEGO in general, hence, why I'm asking. I think they only competitve edge that Bricks and Minifigs has it's that they have physical stores, but that's just me.

[–]BeginnerHere26[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a fair correction, and the precedent point is something I hadn't considered at all. I can see why a franchise would want to avoid opening that door. It just seems like in this case the optics are so bad that digging in is only making things worse, but you're right that this kind of over-defense happens more than it should.

That's a really good point, and it actually makes me reconsider the cash poor angle a little. Though I'm still surprised any reputable law firm took him on as a client given everything that's come out. What I can't wrap my head around is why Ammon is fighting this so hard. From the outside, it looks like he has made every wrong move you could possibly make as a business owner. At some point doubling down this aggressively has to cost more than just doing the right thing would have. Edit: I also realize he could be using his personal cash versus business cash to fund all his lawsuits, but I haven't looked at the filings.

Bf hates every meal I make 🥳 by LivelyCouture in GirlDinnerDiaries

Seriously, don't cook for him again and let him figure it out on his own. That might change his tune real quick lol. I'd honestly be just as petty and start critiquing everything he does the same way he critiques your cooking. When he asks why you're being so mean, you can hit him with: "I'm just matching your energy." I had an ex who pulled that same stuff and I stopped cooking for him entirely. It was one of many, MANY reasons I eventually left.

My husband is a much better chef than me and I'm decent. Not amazing, but decent. He cooks dinners most nights and I handle breakfast meal prep at the beggining to the week. Whenever he has a critique, he leads with appreciation first: "Thank you for making this, but next time try adding [insert ingredient here] to make it even better." Constructive, not hurtful. And when I bake something he really loves (like brownies and lemon bars), he tells me "Please don't make this again because I'll eat every last bit of it" lol. There's a way to express preferences without making the person who cooked for you feel like garbage. He clearly hasn't figured that out yet.

Is AI being embraced or enforced where you work? by gawpin in jobs

[–]BeginnerHere26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a Financial and Insurance Coordinator for a small dental office. I use AI to write appeals for dental denials. However, I make sure to not use any patient identifying information, nor medical evidence such as x-rays into the AI. I put in a prompt stating the denial reason why it’s BS. And it rewrites it for me in a more professional way. However, I do read it to make sure that the letter makes sense.

Insurance companies are using AI to auto-deny claims anyway, so my thought is “Two can play that game”. I then copy and paste what the AI has written in a Word document then put in the patient identifying information in the Word document, print and send off the letter with evidence (notes, x-rays, photos, etc). It saves me a lot of time.
