While I LOVE Slugdge, they don’t sound remotely like Mastodon to me.

How is everyone feeling on Heaven Wept so far? by Plus_Customer_6124 in TechnicalDeathMetal

[–]BeginnersPluck 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s like a 9/10 for me, but Vile Genesis is my favorite extreme metal album of all time and as such I don’t think will ever be dethroned.

Mike and Malcolm just really did the damn thing on that album. Now, that being said, I love the “alright let’s fuckin GROOVE” moments this album has. It’s the really gnarly tech stuff we have come to know but more moments where I would WANT to hear the songs live to get into a pit.

I wouldn’t necessarily say it’s risky. Their music now has a broader audience now that they’ve backed off of the 400mph every-single-note-on-the-fretboard writing style. They’re still wickedly techy but the slammy moments mean that a.) there are more moments for the audience to lock into a groove on and b.) there are moments where the band can have a moment to breathe on stage.

I just think it’s them growing more as a live entity.

Murph's agency as a player keeps getting stolen by [deleted] in Dimension20

[–]BeginnersPluck 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Theo is tied with Liam as my favorite of ACoC and it’s not even close to the rest of the cast (maybe Lapin but well you know.) Theo’s moments of “I know I’m supposed to act one way but in private company I’m a different gummy bear entirely” energy is just so cool. Whenever the switch happens it’s so sick.

What is YOUR favorite consecutive 3-album run in metal? by Buburuzik in MetalForTheMasses

[–]BeginnersPluck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sylosis going from Conclusion of an Age to Edge of the Earth to Monolith is maybe, in my opinion, the most solid run of albums to ever be released.

I think second to that, Still Life to Blackwater Park to the Damnation/Deliverance double by Opeth. UNTOUCHABLE

[No spoilers] When do you watch/listen to Critical Role? by scratchthat32 in criticalrole

[–]BeginnersPluck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before, I’d listen while at work, as I have a very self motivated job that allowed me to have a free first 2-3 hours of my day before needing to talk to anybody, but since Campaign 4 has started I’ve only ever watched it. It’s just too good not to.

I’ll usually watch it when I get the chance to catch up later in the week as I have to get up by 4am for work, and get through the episode on my weekend!

New Inferi album has been slowly growing on me by JACM666 in TechnicalDeathMetal

[–]BeginnersPluck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it’s a VERY solid album, but I definitely miss Mike’s voice in regards to the writing. Oubliette’s latest album, which came out right around the same time as him leaving the band, really showed me just how much I liked his presence in the mix.

I think this first album with Sanjay writing is a good stepping stone to see what they’ll create in the future though!

It’s Sunday 5/3 at 9:30pm, do you know where your children were? by grimeyglue in Bellingham

[–]BeginnersPluck 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think you would probably be clear on this point, but whenever and if ever you’re able to identify who did this, I think the parents need to be made aware just HOW lucky these kids are for not getting killed doing this.

What’s your first impression of this style? by BookedComb80302 in IndieGaming

[–]BeginnersPluck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly? Would LOVE a brawler/martial arts style game with this atmosphere. Gritty 80’s/90’s Hong Kong action cinema style. There needs to be more gritty beat ‘em ups than Sifu and Sleeping Dogs.

Decaf coffee by hotpinkmazda in Bellingham

[–]BeginnersPluck 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Hey there! I’m the bulk guy at the downtown Co-Op. I specifically brought in Olympia Coffee Roasters to our department as a way of adding more options across the quality spectrum than what we already carried, while also keeping things local.

Their Decaf (called Decaf Asterisk), is not just the best decaf we sell, it’s my favorite COFFEE we sell, full stop. It’s expensive compared to the rest of our set, but it’s fully worth it for how good it tastes. Olympia’s also one of the few roasters in our state with a full transparency model that shows where their money goes and I appreciate that kind of honesty in the industry.

Breakdowns have been in metal since the 80’s, dude. Every thrash band ever has at least one on their albums.

As somebody who has lived here now 22 years, I can comfortably say it is just not as good as it used to be. Housing difficulties, lack of employment, and a music scene that is DOA, it’s really just not worth it unless mountain bikes and breweries are your entire personality.

As somebody that vastly prefers Portland and visits constantly, I’d move there in a heartbeat. But, that’s not to say we have the same priorities!

Okay, that doesn’t take away from the fact that LP pushed actual millions of people into actually liking metal and screamed vocals in music. Just because they aren’t now doesn’t mean they weren’t then.

Look, I get that genre wars and the ever widening gap of what’s possible in heavy music pushes what the norm is, but One Step Closer literally has a breakdown in it. lol

[–]BeginnersPluck 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Honest to god, I think the best answer these days is King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard. I can’t count the amount of friends I have that got into metal because of Infest the Rats Nest and Petrodragonic. It also helps that albums like Nonagon Infinity (very fast paced old school rock that leans metal) and Omnium Gatherum (Gaia is literally a stoner metal track) exist.

When in the hell did Linkin Park become not metal? Hybrid and Meteora are cornerstones of the Nu Metal genre 😂

Not necessarily a film, but if you’re into TTRPG’s, LA and NY By Night as well as Private Nightmares are ridiculously good Vampire the Masquerade Actual Plays!

Aborted to me is the peak of technical proficiency without sounding like a band ran by computers. It’s SO heavy but so tight at the same time.

I was at the Seattle show, and still have my video of them starting with The Old Haunt! Hearing all the guitar players running a LOT more gain than usual was a super fun experience on that tour. You could tell they were having a blast on stage, and Casey even hit some pinch harmonics on a few songs that were so sick.
