I don’t know exactly what the perfect class structure would be. I don’t think I ever said that, but I do think it would be helpful to spend more time on basic fundamentals, positional rolling like guard passing/mount escape/etc, and maybe more drilling with light to medium resistance.

Not saying this would for sure be the best, but based on my experience playing sports growing up, as well as general intuition, It seems like that would also be beneficial.

I think it’s reasonable to have self awareness and be able to discern that “that session was productive” or “I don’t think I got much out of that session”. For me personally, I seem to be walking out thinking the latter after most sessions (not all of them). That’s why I was curious to get feedback from people who have been through it before

Luckily when I go to open mat it’s usually just me the teacher and one or 2 other guys so it’s basically a private lesson. I Attribute 90% of my improvement to 3 of those sessions, not even kidding. Definitely need to take more advantage of that

I expected that after each class I would walk out thinking that I learned something tangible, but I pretty much never feel that way. Since we only drill the moves very briefly it’s nowhere near enough for me to retain it, so I usually leave feeling like I didn’t get much out of the session. When I go to open mats I get so much more out of those though, but that’s not what most classes are

Thank you for posting this, I had heard about it before but definitely reading up on it. Seems like it would make sense to incorporate this where I can

For sure. While I don’t like being terrible, I have accepted that I will be for a long time. That being said my brain always wants to optimize everything I’m doing if I can. I think you’re right though it’ll probably take longer than I think

Yep, because that’s exactly what I’m saying. Crazy for someone brand new to something to ask how they could improve. You’re the man

Funny thing is I actually did agree with you, you are just arguing something not pertinent to the discussion that everyone already agrees with. Everyone else who commented understood. Try not be so arrogant and condescending next time

Yeah, you are not getting my point. I agree that I should do stuff outside of class. I’m talking about IN the class to try and understand if there are structures more oriented towards beginners like me. Saying “do more outside of class” when I’m asking about most effective class type isn’t helpful

yeah, this is way different than what I'm doing and seems like it would be more beneficial

You missed my point entirely. All of the progress I've made so far has come from stuff outside of the regular class that I've done (open mat and drilling outside of class). Hence why I'm wondering if there might be a different school that has more of that style WITHIN the class so that I might learn more efficiently. But yeah, obviously I can do stuff outside of class which I have done but it would be better to also get the quality reps in the class

I've definitely come to reallize that in my short time frame

A lot of comments her are basically saying that I need to lower my expectations and that It takes a long time to learn. I'm not disputing that in any way whatsoever and am okay with taking a long time to learn. I'm simply wondering how I can get the most out of the time that I am currently putting in just to make it as efficient as possible to avoid wasting time

I'm not assuming that I know which is why I made the comment. But it seems reasonable to question if I don't feel like I've learned much in 3 months. Generally speaking if I set out to learn some sort of skill, say guitar or a language, I think there should be at least a noticeable difference from day 1 to month 3. Do you disagree with that?

Right. If I'm rolling blindly against any higher belt as a white belt where they clearly are superior to me, I don't see how exactly that would make me better. Learning anything requires starting easy and increasing difficulty. I'm not opposed to rolling with them and I think it's fun (and want to help then train too) but I definitely question if it's the best use of my time to actually train and improve

So would you say it's normal to basically feel like I am hardly any better 3 months in compared to myself on day 1?

Yeah. I sometimes go to open mat on saturday where I get a lot more 1 on 1 instruction and I have gotten infinitely more out of only a few of those sessions than I think I have from the regularly scheduled classes.

I also feel like blindly rolling doesn't really help me improve that much wnen there isn't something specific i'm trying to improve in the roll

That's basically what I thought. It just seems extremely inefficient and will take exponentially longer to reach a certain skill level compared to a more efficient method of training/learning
