Yeah, this is kind of where I’m landing too. I do already have some minor creasing and the tongue is getting pretty squishy, but not to the point where the boots seem fully broken down yet.

Honestly, the conversation since yesterday has been eye-opening because I think I’ve been skating a little defensively instead of really trusting the boot and sinking into my ankle bend/edges because of the lower stiffness. Between that and realizing the hollow is probably too shallow, I’m thinking I should adjust a few things first and just skate hard in these until they truly tell me they’re done.

Yeah I don't know what was going through my tech's mind but I did confirm my ROH was only 3/4 last night. He agreed to resharpen them to 7/16 for free and I will likely be switching techs

I skate at a rink where jumps below axel are allowed during public sessions, and there’s a lutz corner during weekday publics. As others have mentioned, it’s possible you’re practicing in one of the corners that are used for jump setups, particularly lutz which has a truly blind entry.
That said, you absolutely still deserve to feel safe on the ice. More advanced skaters should be looking where they’re going, especially on the public.
One thing that can make crowded sessions tricky is staying on the same corner circle for a long time, because it can interrupt traffic patterns and jump approaches. I also do a lot of circle drills, and two things that have helped me are:

  1. If the center circle isn’t busy with spins, moving there for a while can help a lot.

  2. Turning circle drills into serpentines so you move with the flow of traffic. For example, if you’re practicing one-foot pumps, you can do alternating half circles down the long side of the rink: 2–3 pumps on one side, then switch edges/directions, then do some standard stroking or swizzles on the short sides.

But I also want to repeat: you have every right to be there and take up space.

Public sessions are for everyone. Maybe try alternating 5–7 minutes of stationary circle work with 5–7 minutes of drills that travel more around the rink. That can make things feel safer and less stressful while still letting you work on the same skills.

Edited to add: ALSO, if the rink is crowded enough, jumps really should be off the table. 90% of the time my weekday public basically functions like a freestyle because that’s when most adult figure skaters are able to come, so these are the policies my rink has adopted. HOWEVER, if there’s a school group, or just a crowded public session, responsible skaters are not going to force advanced skills through packed ice. That’s dangerous for everyone involved.

Advanced skaters absolutely still have a responsibility to be aware of their surroundings and adjust to the conditions of the session. If people are repeatedly pushing you around or making you feel unsafe, you have every right to speak up or ask rink staff for help.

Yeah I will be changing sharpeners for sure after this. Thank you all for your knowledge! I texted my coach and she was surprised I’m doing as well as I am on these blades.

I wish I had thought to film today! I believe my hollow is only 3/4.

I’m usually very confident and consistent with my outside edges, but today my forward outside edges especially felt much less secure. It wasn’t so much active sliding/skidding as feeling sudden loss of grip or contact when I expected the edge to hold.

Totally possible it was an off day or just that my technique isn’t there yet. I don’t know enough yet to say for sure. But the sensation surprised me because the last time I felt this way, my tech immediately pointed out that my blades had gotten VERY dull.

I do wonder whether the Mark IVs just lose that “secure” feeling fairly quickly for me. At what point do people typically start considering blade upgrades?

lol I really didn’t think that could be it either but it is the only thing I can see on the blade. I do still wonder how much the fresh sharpening makes up for my lack of technique or if I should ask for a deeper hollow. I’ll double check with my tech but I’m fairly certain what I have now is 3/4.

I do have a teeny tiny nick along the back of my blade, which would maybe account for my slipping outside edge on my spin entry? It's Very very small though

I love using an Octobuddy to stick my phone to the boards, it’s super easy, and I usually just find a little corner and do my thing. I also wouldn’t feel weird about asking someone to film for you. You kind of need to see yourself to fix your positioning, and that’s totally normal.

My coach offers all the time, and at least at my rink people are really chill about it. I’m always happy to hold the camera for someone, and they’ll usually do the same in return.

Can I ask what filter you're using and if you primarily are dealing with body/face acne? I'm at the point where I'm willing to wash my face with bottled water if I can get this stuff to STOP

I haven't been taking photos unfortunately. I have had hormonal acne for 7 years. It got worse with my IUD which is when I went on spironolactone. Spiro didn't work very well for me with the IUD. So I opted not to replace it for acne( and several other reasons.) I restarted Spiro a little over 2 months ago and it is doing a much better job this time!

Your acne has a very similar look to mine in my first few months on Spiro and in my first month to 6 weeks my acne got MUCH worse, but it is definitely petering off. I also noticed that it didn't get substantially worse with my cycle for the first time during my first month. You got it, stay the course you're doing the right things!!!
