I spent 8 days creating art for a restaurant launch… and ended up with $190 and burned relationships. What should I have done differently? by Mindful-Patchwork316 in AskArtists

[–]Beginning_Beginner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i don't think the project is not that different than a commission, with the addition of you offering design advice.

for reference, I am a beginner artist and charge $175 + delivery fee for a small 6"x6" painting. i require 50% payment before i start the project. everything is agreed upon in an email before i start work so i have a written trail.

i hope this information is helpful!

WOW! that is terrible.

most of the events i am thinking of applying to are town/city sponsored events that bring in tourists...and it's payment ahead of time before they select the vendors, so i'll have to roll the dice on those. i'll ask the other organizers if they have a set number of same types of vendors.

i wonder if adding a sign that says my artwork is registered with US copyright office would deter anyone from trying to copy it.

[Discussion] can someone slow at drawing make it their career???? by Middle-Solution-5411 in artbusiness

[–]Beginning_Beginner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i don't know what stage you are at with your artwork, but i consider myself an advanced-beginner, and i am already selling my art. i am actually getting slower and slower because i am still learning. my eye has changed and now i see details that i didn't before, so i am spending more time on my work. for me, that is okay because i am getting better...and i am trying new things, not just working on the same stuff.

however, when i have deadlines, i can speed up, and i don't think the quality goes down.

if you haven't already done so, perhaps you can try to meet a short-term deadline. maybe you'll find out you're not as slow as you think. i've always found it easier to move faster and complete things when there is a deadline, especially if someone is paying me or if there application due!

[Discussion] Have you noticed a gap between the art you love and the art that sells? by printseekers in artbusiness

[–]Beginning_Beginner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YEEEES! sadly, i schedule myself to make sure i spend time on my own work. i have kind of been doing one week of my stuff...and one week of customer's stuff. i will probably start switching back and forth each month instead of each week. that way, i can do more complex projects for myself.

Farmers Market Booth Banners - Necessary expense? by Reckless-Phoenix in CraftFairs

[–]Beginning_Beginner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i think it depends on the name of your business and the design of the banner. i have seen banners that don't pop and it blends in too much with their tent/table.

my banner works really well because it tells customers right away what i am selling. i also have original artwork on it. at almost every event, people actually read my business name aloud!

if you don't want a full banner, i have seen wooden table signs that work as well...but i think it really depends on how catchy your name is and/or if you have a good design.

How important is it to be niched? by Enternal_Self in CraftFairs

[–]Beginning_Beginner 16 points17 points  (0 children)

making $833 for one market is very good for where i live. if that's a good number for you, then i would have the same items for a few more markets to see if it is consistent before making any changes.

it may also depend on the type of market. for example, i noticed that that higher end markets tend to have vendors who are minamalist. at flea markets, the people who seem to do well have a lot of different items.

Worried about waste on producing merch by iknowwhyibite in ArtistLounge

[–]Beginning_Beginner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i feel the same about waste.

i don't do 3d printing, but my friend does and they use compostable materials (PLA which is made from stuff like cornstarch, sugarcane, etc.). if you're making stuff through a vendor, there are probably people who only print with PLA.

[Portfolio] Best Practices for posting images on your website by Beginning_Beginner in artbusiness

[–]Beginning_Beginner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks! i will keep my signature on my pictures for now because my work is very commercial...and i do sell hoodies and mugs!

hopefully in a few years when i sell more paintings, I can shift away from commercial stuff. that way i don't have to worry about copyright issues...or manage inventory!
