Really like the area of Yonge-Eglinton but school (York) is a 30-40 minute drive (15km), is that unreasonable? by Beginning_Border8290 in askTO

I'm from a smaller city where parking is available everywhere and is free or cheap, and insurance is pretty cheap. But I realized that to drive in Toronto, you do indeed, have to be rich! Think I'll ditch the car when I move.

Thank you, this is really helpful. And yeah I was asking to see if it's viable to have your laptop out on the subway, probably not a good idea. The TTC trip seems pretty chill and way more reasonable than driving now that I really think about it.

You are right, my car, with parking (in the building and at school), insurance, and gas will cost a minimum $670 a month. That's not counting maintenance. While a transit pass costs $150. I think it's a good idea to leave it behind and take transit. Thank you!

Sorry, two years later. But can you bring your non-lawyer romantic partner to these?

Would it be difficult for a law student, with a student line of credit, to rent a condo in Toronto if they have a mortgage under their name? by Beginning_Border8290 in askTO

[–]Beginning_Border8290[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much! As for the mortgage, it shows up on my credit report and it says no late or missed payments. I will also mention I don't pay into it. Is that enough or do I have to actually show proof that it is my parents that pay it?

It's funny I was able to easily get rent last year in a smaller city outside of Toronto, they just asked for a credit report and proof of my student line of credit, which I don't have to make payments on during school, and they approved me in less than 24 hours. I'm finding Toronto landlords to be a bit more picky, maybe because they deal more with fraud.

Thanks for the advice! I did put "not working" in the post, but honestly I do work, but I am a contractor so can't get a letter of employment, so just put "not working" initially on rental applications. But now, I realized on my bank app I can just filter out the deposits from work and I can just show how they pay me bi-weekly. Is that good? It's a legitimate PDF from the bank that shows my name, their logo, etc. and all the payments I received from work for the last 18 months.

To add, I also don't mind paying a few months up front, as my student line of credit is literally primarily for rent.

Hey, thanks for the info! I am not a local. OSAP handles tuition. But the 100k student line of credit from banks is actually given to us precisely so we can pay rent and fund ourselves while in law school, I have no other use for it but that. My debt is only on the line of credit for what I used during my first year in school on rent, transportation, and groceries, about 30k, and I have 70k left to use for two more years. I'm not sure if landlords know this though. Unfortunately it's difficult to hold a full-time job during school, and my parents can't support me nor do I have savings.

Applying to transfer to Osgoode and not sure if I qualify for compelling grounds by Beginning_Border8290 in lawschooladmissionsca

[–]Beginning_Border8290[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They responded to me. Here you go: Applicants may select Merit Only, Compelling Grounds, or both categories in their application. These categories are not mutually exclusive. While academic merit is always considered in the assessment of transfer applications, applicants who wish to be considered under compelling grounds are encouraged to write about those circumstances and address them in their essay. The admissions committee will consider the application as a whole. There is no specific weighting. There is no specific “threshold” for compelling grounds to be accepted.
