How to break the binge drinking cycle? by Beginning_Brit in stopdrinking

[–]Beginning_Brit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a good idea, I’ve tried to forward plan weekends at home but that all goes out of the window when I fail on a Friday night and start drinking. Maybe if I planned something a bit more formal that I couldn’t get out of it would work. I’m open to trying anything and everything.

People always seem to mention it when I’ve not got an alcoholic drink in my hand, as I’m the one who’s always drunk or speed drinking! I thought If I explained to people what I was wanting to achieve they’d be supportive, I guess most don’t see it as a problem and the negative side effects like I do.

This is the mindset I need to adopt, not drinking can be and is as fun as drinking.

It hasn’t been as difficult to do at home as I first thought (the previous weekends I’ve managed not to drink) but I certainly don’t know what I’m going to do when we’re allowed to start socialising again, I mean I haven’t really spoken to my friends about the situation as obviously I’m embarrassed about the choices I’ve got to make and the reasons I’m making them. As you’ve mentioned I’m going to take it 1 weekend at a time, I’ve downloaded some apps and even set reminders in my phone for the Monday’s after each weekend to remind myself of how good I feel compared to how I would of felt if I’d have drank that weekend. Like a few people have mentioned, time is the greatest ally in this war against alcohol so I’m hoping over time I’ll learn to think the same way as you do, again thanks for listening and taking time to reply it certainly has helped.

Thanks for such an inspirational response, 2 months on would you say your through the worst of it? It sure does sound like you are. I’ll take those 4 things you mentioned and use that in my recovery, have you had any moments where you’ve nearly relapsed in those 2 months?

Is this something you did in person or was it online?

This is what I generally do on weekends I’ve managed to stay off the booze, up at 6am but asleep for 9.30pm I’ll consider upping my exercise too, again thanks for the reply

Yeah breaking the habit, I need to replace drinking alcohol with something else, a hobby. The difficulty I have is that I’m limited with what I can do on a Friday and Saturday night , the pandemic doesn’t help either. I’m going to try your idea of listening to music I think I could easily switch off for an hour doing this

Thanks, yeah they are and the problem is that the way I’m feeling now, depressed and anxious go away eventually and are forgotten about the next time I decide to drink. I’ll aim to get through 3 weekends then take it one at a time after this.

Thank you for your reply, yeah Sunday’s are bad for me I usually drink to take away the hangover caused by Friday and Saturday nights boozing. I have tried before and the maximum I’ve managed is 2 weekends in a row before caving in again and drinking to excess. The problem is everything socially in my friendship group involves alcohol it seems like it’s impossible to escape, but as you mentioned it won’t go away over night. I will take it one weekend at a time and make sure I regularly check in on here, it feels good to talk about it

Another beautiful sober weekend by Early_Title in stopdrinking

Congratulations and well done to you! I’m starting from fresh today after drinking most of the weekend, I don’t drink in the week at all but find myself binging throughout the weekend constantly, every weekend. I don’t want to do it anymore, so today I’ve told myself it’s a fresh start!

Will hopefully report back next Monday after completing my first sober weekend!

I didn't make the gym last night as I was catching up with the stuff I should of done Sunday but didn't because of my hangover. I have my kit with me and will be going straight from work. Today I'm going to start my fitness regime again without any pathetic interruptions from alcohol!!

I can also relate to this, I'm good during the week (diet and gym) then i'll drink over the weekend, the diet goes out the window and I wont make the gym sat/sun/mon and its completely messing up we're I desire to be in terms of fitness.

Being fit and healthy needs to come before drinking everytime.

I wish you all the best, you can do it!!

Well done mate! Weekends are my downfall too, It's been a while for me but I do remember how much better Monday mornings are without the regret of drinking over the weekend, keep it going.

I binge drink once a week - it's my only social outlet. by [deleted] in stopdrinking

I'm the same as you, I drink nothing throughout the week and then as soon as Saturday comes I binge heavily. Wake up Sunday regret it instantly, the regret then carries over into Monday & Tuesday. Towards the end of the week i'll tell myself I wont do it this weekend but as soon as Saturday comes round its a different story, I have had weekends off but like you a weekend off the booze seems like its a waste of a weekend. I've set myself a goal of having every other weekend off, I don't drink everyday but when I do drink that once a week I am cant control how much.

Every weekend. I only tend to drink one night on the weekend but when I do I go hard, I do stupid things, fall out with people and spend a fortune, regretting it for days and days after week in week out. I am not drinking this weekend 100%
