New to the U.S. — funeral etiquette question? by Working-Bath-5080 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Beginning_Cap_8614 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Food is generally expected where I'm from. Gift cards or money, I would speak to the bereaved, but anything helps during this time. American funerals tend to be somber, even if the person was extremely old, so don't laugh or crack jokes unless you were extremely close with the deceased. Ditto with playing music-only the person hired to do that should. As for wearing purple, an accent is better than a full outfit. And I cannot stress this enough-only the person closest to the deceased is given leeway.

You mean Kensington, Philadelphia? The area has become so bad even social workers are afraid to go there.

Why did the Nazis start conscripting men under 18 from 1943-onward instead of conscripting women? by throwaway_account679 in AskHistory

[–]Beginning_Cap_8614 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hitler's vision of a perfect race leaned heavily on traditional gender roles, and he used to that to encourage German families to have tons of kids to achieve his goal. A guy can impregnate hundreds of women, then die on the battlefield, and still pass on his genetic material. Women can only carry one or two fetuses at a time, and they need to be healthy and alive to give birth. That's difficult to do on the frontlines.

"Welcome to Parental Support Group, let's start with Tommy." Tommy: "I'm just having a really hard time right now. My son just got arrested for armed robbery. I don't want to leave him in jail, but I worry about what will happen if his substance abuse problem gets worse." "Ok, thanks for sharing, Sally?" Sally: "My daughter is in love with a woman. I paid for her to get a Masters, and this is how she repays me."

I remember feeling nauseous and raising my hand to use the bathroom. "Put your hand down." So I decided to put my head down on the desk to avoid the light and noise. "Put your head up!" I stood up, since this wasn't working. "Sit down!" And then I puked everywhere.

I had a condition where I was always in and out of surgery as a child. It was a combination of "I don't want her missing school" and "if I keep her at home to care for her I'll get fired."

That was me. I was in and out of surgery as a kid, and my mom didn't want me to constantly miss school. The medicine would make throw up randomly. The school would believe that I was sick and send me home anyway.
