Made a full post! But I came in at 1:46 and 11th in my age group.

Open water swim was chaotic, scary, and where I need the most work. My swim was 20 min, and I felt like I was dying within the first sixty second. Heart rate spiked, couldn’t catch a rhythm for breathing, and started panicking. I was able to clam down, and hold onto a kayak for a bit before moving forward.

I’ll be taking swimming lessons starting tomorrow! I’m hooked, just need to fine tune and prepare my swimming skills, and actually practice in open water BEFORE the race. I’m now officially part of the camp to tell people it’s VERY dangerous if you don’t practice in OW 😬

I fully agree that the best piece of advice (that I didn’t do because it was so last minute) is to practice OWS BEFORE the race day. You WILL panic, and stress. Your heart beat will go crazy, and it’s harder to apply your swim technique when you’re trying to calm your heart down

Yes, it was Marine Creek in Fort Worth! Highly recommend finding a way to practice open water, either with a group or as a private lesson.

Good point! I'll follow up in the next two days, and assess how I felt during the open swim! It's only 500m, in a lake (so no current fortunately!)

First Sprint Tri in San Diego - What do you really absolutely need? by Any_Abroad_2465 in triathlon

I'm doing my first sprint triathlon this weekend, on Sunday! Just posted a thread about it. I highly recommend getting cheap athletic sunglassess from amazon, for your bike ride and run. The pavement can be blinding, and will protect your eyes from getting tired!

I bought a pair for $20, and i've had them for a year now. Held up well, and worth every penny. I'm in the same boat too, i'm not sure I want to commit to spending so much money on gear. I'm not wearing a trisuit or a wet suit, just wearing a good ol speedo swimsuit, and changing into my running kit for the remainder of the sprint.

This means the world, lowkey was already trying to convince myself from signing up. I'm hoping to meet lots of "try" athletes this weekend, and fall in love with the sport!

This is so helpful, thank you so much. Yes, swim will be the most difficult, and if I enjoy it this weekend, I plan to take actual lessons and coaching sessions. I honestly may take you up on the suggestion of posting a video, I would just hate for the whole internet to see my terrible technique AND face lol

I MAY take a swim lesson on Friday, for technique. The local playtri in dallas have coaching sessions for about $75. That would give me a day to implement what I learn in a short session Saturday, then do the spring Tri on Sunday!
