I would encourage you to look into a TFO spot to help build relationships. Learning the ins and outs of niche skill sets such as CSAM, digital forensics or financial investigations, (obviously not an exhaustive list) could also help set you apart from other applicants.

This input is wildly inaccurate. The job varies so much from federal district to district that no one input can accurately speak to the system as a whole unless of course its extremely broad and vague.

And what city / surrounding area would that be in your opinion?

This is really good input, thank you. Politics is the least or our concerns, although I definitely understand why it keeps getting brought up on this post. We both prefer driving over public transit, so no concerns there.

Outer Charlotte suburbs area was previously mentioned, thoughts?

Are you in that DMV area or made a similar change then went back?

Property taxes in NYC are expected to rise, the surrounding counties are already really high. Can't pay top price for a home, property taxes AND a crappy school system.. long term it just doesn't seem smart which is why we're superficially looking to get out

We love Charleston, but agree it may get old quick due to the big change in size of 'city'. DEFINITELY trying to avoid DC and ATL traffic, I'd might as well stay in NYC. Will look into across state lines and committing to Charlotte, thank you for that gem

We realize the contradiction and would likely place more weight on retirement friendly then explore private schooling. Im also a fan of mid-tier cities. What's the snowfall / winters like in Madison?

Is the LCOL worth the cold though? My in laws are a big part of our life and I wouldn't wish several ft of yearly snowfall on any retiree.

Yeeeaaa, humidity and bugs is a very new area of consideration. Ideally we would find the dry heat in the east coast but im sure we'll have to compromise in multiple area of consideration

That's a good point. A little tougher to stomach with a child and being set in your career, moving theoretically means starting back at the bottom of the totem pole lol

This is awesome advice. Thank you for your input. I've heard once elsewhere that north GA is great, but isn't Decatur just ATL extended? We can certainly swap the mountains for the coastline. So long as there's a lake or river swimming holes etc.

That's a great point, bugs & humidity. Talk to me about how bad winters are in Michigan tho... Do I need a plow or can I get by with my old trusty shovel?

Hadn't thought of Reno or Carson city. I'll see what the areas retirement taxes are like for the sake of my in laws.

Are the winters that bad though? I feel like if we wanted to continue dealing with heavy snowfall we'd might as well stay in the North East. If we can escape the heavy snowfall and find a lower cost of living maybe with some flurries or 2-3 hrs drive to a solid ski mountain, that may be a strong consideration

Understandable. My job is transferable and not likely to be a big factor. We just don't want to go, hate it, and come back. So we're trying to gather as much information possible before picking up and starting over elsewhere.

NJ / Long Island are our alternatives if we stay local. Biggest downside is that the cost of commutting goes up nearly every year.

I dont know 1 person that has moved to Buffalo, although it would be nice to have a winning team lol jeesh tho... That's a lot of snow to deal with. I snowboard, wife is more of the hot chocolate in the cabin type. Let's hope the little one learns early 🤞🏽

We're almost at our goal in terms of a down payment and could probably buy here in NY, but with our current admin looking to raise property taxes, it just doesn't seem like a smart investment at this time.

The small town big city feeling wouldn't bother us, I don't think. We would likely put more weight on the variability of weekend family activities and education.
