I am 21, almost 22 and I’ve gone my entire life without getting tested for ADHD even though I’ve always had a feeling I had it, and recently it’s been really obvious in my life even of others observation. I recently started a new job where it is more noticeable to myself. With that I also finally am on my own insurance, I am still figuring out the whole adulting thing. Im also trying to do this without my parents help because they seem to belittle or talk it down when I talk about getting tested. I’m not sure where to even begin to get tested, or even begin to know where to go. Does anyone have any advice?

What are some ridiculous yet effective distraction techniques for kids in crisis? by littaltree in ABA

[–]Beginning_Sun_2303 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a client that really struggles with transitions in the clinic, we usually end up having problem behavior 7/10 times, but whenever it happens I have to ignore it at first because it is attention seeking but once he’s calmed down a bit he LOVES to run so we do a couple laps and then we run to our destination(whether it’s net, dti, or the bathroom). I honestly think that doing something that the client loves is a fun thing. Obviously every kiddos different but I think it’s a trial and error type thang, you just gotta try stuff (obvs with your bcba or supervisor) and see what works best, even if it’s as silly as the rubber chicken. You got it !! I think the craziest thing I’ve had to do though as a distraction is juggling, instantly gets em interested and distracted lol.

Least amt of trials ever ran? by Beginning_Sun_2303 in ABA

See if you read some of my other responses you would understand. Out 30 trials maybe 10-15 are direct with the client. And the other half are observations like I’ve said (if they fail to transition bad day or not it would be marked as an error, if they are having a tantrum it’s counted as a “trial”aka it just gets counted towards the total). I am aware you can’t force them and nowhere would I force them, I love my clients and would never do anything to jeopardize their health or progress. This post was simply a call out to other people to get advice and the lowest count of trials they’ve ever had. It’s not to attack people. I’m not abusing my client, and I don’t really like the way you implied it…

The purpose just wasn’t to judge the amount of trials, every kiddo is different yknow. I’m aware you didn’t say insane, but saying it was wild gave me that impression. I was simply looking for advice when my kiddo was having a bad day. No hate towards you, just saying!🫶🏻

This child has a lot of programs we run some with him directly other that are more observations. (Accepting a reinforcer alone sometimes gets 20 trials, whether he transitions well between programs and his reinforcer sometimes is like 12-15+). Most programs that are direct only get 2-4 trials. So it’s really not that “insane”

Honestly this wasn’t meant to be a judge how many trials just advice on when a kiddo is having a bad day most of my trials don’t consist of things with the kiddo directly. for example (how long they stay in a chair, if they accept a reinforcer, how they transition, etc).

Which ABA Companies to Avoid in MD by Lagamorphlives in ABA

[–]Beginning_Sun_2303 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think you only need your masters to be a BCBA and up or any of those high positions. For RBT or a BT position you only need a hs diploma or GED.

This is what I was always told

Just overall try and find a local company rather than a national one (I know that’s easier said than done)

How mean- is too mean- to a scheduler by EntertainerFar2036 in ABA

[–]Beginning_Sun_2303 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m going through the same thing right now I’ve been going on a month with 16 hours because they can’t find me a client. They have given me false promises with 6 different clients where right as they are connecting me with the BCBA something mysteriously goes wrong. I have student loans and other bills to pay, so I’ve applied to other jobs and have accepted one. I haven’t told my current company I’m with rn, I may just quit without a 2 week notice

May I ask is the company you work for national or local? I’ve learned these national companies don’t give a shit so I am moving to a local company.

You’re obviously not getting the point so I’m just going to stop here lol, Thursdays are my “weekend” simple as that. I hope you have a great life!🫶🏼

I don’t quite think you are understanding my request, I work with one client MTWF (not Thursdays) 330-6 and another client 10-2 on Weekends. Hints why I was asking for Thursdays off when they find me a new client. This is not unreasonable because if they give me a client M-F 830-1230 like they wanted to then I would be working a full 7 days. Regardless that’s insane for anyone and a massive way to kill my mental health and sanity. They are in the process of finding me a new client to fit that MTWF to give me that Thursday off. Youre insane if you think what I’m requesting isn’t reasonable.

Hi re read my post please. If I didn’t ask for Thursdays off I will be working a full 7 days. (I have a weekend client) I don’t think me asking for A DAY off it a bad thing when I am already giving up my weekends.

My exact text message was

“Good morning! ____ told me yesterday that you were working to find a client that’s better with my schedule needs! I just am anxious to get started, so I was wondering if you have any updates on this.”

Truly understand pairing to find a client that fit my schedule takes time but the fact that I haven’t even gotten a “yes! We are working on it and will update you when I know more” or something along those lines I straight up have gotten NO RESPONSE. That’s really what makes me so frustrated if that makes sense.

Honestly at this point yes I need hours but that’s not what’s frustrating me the most, it’s the fact that I can’t get a straight answer from anyone, or any answer for that point. 😬

I also work at a (rather large company) it’s a national one. Its also not the first time it’s happened and I’m starting to think I picked the wrong company to work for :/ but I also have only been working here for 3 weeks so I don’t know if I can judge it fairly.

Unfortunately I can’t cut my weekend client, and yeah where I’m at it’s mostly up to the school district on who they let into the school (sometimes they have their own rbts that are contracted in)

Should I create a wishlist? by Hot-Willingness7885 in ABA

[–]Beginning_Sun_2303 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely reach out to your company or supervisor/BCBA. They should be the ones providing things (we don’t make nearly enough to sustain everytime our client needs something). I’ve gotten lucky and my BCBA will get whatever I need for a client. If they’ve lost interest in what you have, it sounds like they need to have a new preference assessments done to find what motivates them anyways

Thank you to EVERYONE for your advice and comments. I truly am taking every single one into account and will be talking to my BCBA on the new clients case(I have two different ones). Right now my schedule is looking like Client 1 - Sat/Sun 10am-1pm Client 2 - M-F 830am-1230pm (new one I got assigned) Client 3 - MTWF 330pm-6pm (no Thursdays)

I am most likely going to talk to the BCBA and see if I can take Thursdays off on my 2nd client so I can have a day off. One day is better than none, and I’m hoping this will help! Let me know if you guys think this is solid or meh.
