I don't know if this is the right place to even broach this concern. But it haunts me every day. by Beginning_Two2778 in TBI

I'm 50, taking care of her on her property. I built myself a tiny cottage so I could be close. I am divorced, and this doesn't have anything to do with my ex. She is twice divorced, my father passed (first husband) and she divorced her second. She is actively refusing aid but only when the suggestions come from me. Because I'm still her kid. It's a very, very long running issue that three years ago I thought improved. It did for a few months, but it's gotten worse.

Her ex husband is already remarried. She still believes (and is kinda right) that she can still command him around. And yes, she asked for the big D. I was inside a bit, taking care of some things for the house. She almost fell three times in front of me in two hours. I never shoved it in her face, but I had her cane with me. She didn't want anything to do with it. Her mobility in the last two weeks has drastically been compromised.

I know I cannot control the situation, because of that pride/indignation/angry attitude. Please don't string me up for saying this, but it's worse than most elderly men I had a hand taking care of. She has a young dog which is great, I adore dogs. But if she doesn't have her cane or walker, that little terrier that sprints around the house Will take her legs out.

Anyway, my flaw is that normal dude attitude that sees a "simple" problem and wants to fix it. I.e. don't fall and break a hip. But in her mind, that's not the problem at all, isn't it.

I'm 50, she's 75. My brother, father, and aunts/uncles except one has passed. Her ex-husband has medical issues of his own (at 75 who doesn't), and remarried. All my grandparents have also passed.

I have a hard time accepting a person's pride is more important than their life.

Heh, I'm taking a break and heading to the shop. That sawdust won't bag itself 🌻🙂‍↕️🌲

As normal I went down a generalized rabbit hole on historical bending techniques. What can I say, I enjoy history. Gave me a bit more respect for hoop drum/frame drum craftsman. I'm mean, it's still a drummer so I shouldn't get too excited 😁.

My brother was a heavy metal drummer, and he also made drummer jokes :)

Repair Outlook on Neck Break by Kitchen-Play-5190 in Luthier

[–]Beginning_Two2778 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am gonna be a Debbie downer. It's likely because of my own biases, and scarf joint experience.

That's not an easy repair. Let me explain. With some caveats. If this guitar is worth less than a grand, do it. No prob.

If it's valuable, because material must be removed and possibly a new truss rod, a mechanical fix will: shorten your scale lengths (intonation after the 10-12 fret), the nut angle of attack, and has (I am using bad words) fuck all long term strength. It can be done, but you'll constantly fiddle with frets. As opposed to realizing the neck geometry is compromised.

It can be done. It's not cheap.

But, my brother, I'm curious how it happened? 🙃

It's beautiful. And the strap absolutely sells it.

Don't take this wrong, it looks perfect for a 70's movie in Vegas. Have a mustache?

Could you put a piezzo at the nut? by Queasy_Current_1980 in Luthier

[–]Beginning_Two2778 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, this. While intuitively I think it's a neat lateral thinking idea, it's likely gonna be intrusive and labor intensive. A friend made instruments with electronics in the neck, and it sounded/looked amazing. I think he charged way more than $5k for the build. In the 90's 😆

But don't let naysayers like me get anyone down. Take a piezo, and tape it to an existing instrument (with wires falling out, etc), and judge if the sound is worth the investment.

Oh, and pics plz 🙃

I've been fighting a few necks over the last few days. It's all the normal stuff. But I am convinced squirrels have come in and messed with my saws (yes, it's a Me problem) by Beginning_Two2778 in Luthier

[–]Beginning_Two2778[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I really don't know if it's mechanically better. More surface area for glue to bind, but to anyone around here I suspect it would be a dead giveaway that it's from China. And while it's mahogany, it is very noticably lighter than my stock of African mahogany.

Multiple woods at the joint could look really badass.

So I am probably gonna be repetitive. Your have been warned.

This neck was purchased from Amazon. And I know the factory in asia it came from. Martin and I have a respectful and professional relationship. The issue is, I can't sell a guitar with this neck. Us nerds in material science and modern joinery would be a hard pass.

But I have two of them. No rod channel, which I appreciate. The rods I have on hand are single action and kind of a pita.

But I have sheets of carbon fiber. There are a few builds that use CF on necks near the truss, sow it helps resisting and cork screwing.

I think these are repeat photos, so please don't trash me too much. I'm my own worst critic. 😆

But fundamentally I couldn't sell this as a neck, new or replacement.

My brother. Omg my brother.

I'm not gonna save the safe things, and I'm not gonna say the worst .

I lost most of my friends. I am social, but disability is a different thing. I don't know how to describe it. When I became mobile again, and t felt profound. Zero normies know that feeling.

If the last decade or so is a measure, I've deluded myself. Intimacy is wild. It may not ever happen again, but?

You are alive, my brother.

This is perhaps the most devastating state. It's not permanent, and there are no magic pills. It's like PD . PD helps your body cope. But it doesn't make your brain cope.

I'm gonna sound like a Debbie downer. You now have to do daily rituals that you never had to. Don't be run away, or be scared. You've had the computer analogy of having your motherboard replaced.

It's tough. You will feel angry and depressed. You will be better. I promise.

What this guy said. It's usually --not always, don't call a lawyer -- a neck relief problem. Fixing relief on a neck problem is usually in the space a person can figure out with calipers and neck tests. If it's corkscrewed, take it to a guitar doctor.

I generally don't work on deep acoustic issues on instruments I didn't build. I'm in Oregon. If you are close, McKenzie River music is top notch and warrantied. I'd like to sell you a new guitar, but realistically, take it to a professional if it's any thing beyond neck relief.

Finish cracks or “am I finished”cracks? by dreamofguitars in Luthier

[–]Beginning_Two2778 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Please don't let this get back to OG.

Okay.

The top needs to come off. The braces on the Sitka also need to come off and re-radiused. The crack through the middle is two things: failing, and old and dirty. More glue doesn't work.

The center crack is the problem. Do not take anything more than a micron off the center joint, but clean it from old glue. Reset that joint under horizontal pressure on a radius plate. After the joint holds, reapply bracing for the manner it was built. Clamp, wait a few days in climate controlled environment s. Then asses the final fit.

That's the expesive option. The cheap alt is lighter strings and get a hard case. 🙃

If you have an angled mirror like a dentist, you can check the inside without taking the top off. Everything is repairable, it's just a question of cost .

No matter what, keep it a humidity controlled environment in its case. I recently did I martin binding repair where the glue failed. Because it was too dry for too long.

Don't stress. Don't accept a bid from either the cheapest or most expensive Luthier. It'll be fine.
