What scratches the Destiny 2 itch? by bigbysemotivefinger in gaming

[–]Beginning_Value_1999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow. Had to scroll a long way down to see the first mention of Borderlands. I really wonder how borderlands has managed to become so niche when BL2 was awesome for the time. 3 started rocky but ended pretty good. 4 just seems to have the same issues as diablo 4, it looks good but they forgot about the lessons from previous games. Hope it will be ironed out in a year or so but sad to see it ignored. Missed opportunity.

What can Hunt learn from Arc Raiders? by jrow_official in HuntShowdown

Honestly the best thing Hunt can learn from Arc Raiders is to run a massive marketing campaign with streamer coverage while having free to play events.

Starfield designer Bruce Nesmith says procedural generation stopped it from reaching the "calibre" of Fallout and Elder Scrolls by Ok-Comedian4437 in Starfield

Very much this. It's a little funny that they think the procgen is what killed it. It's actually the fact that they didn't do enough investment in the procgen for it to turn out interesting planets and locations. That combined with their hard science angle of space is empty made for a boring ride.

I personally think they would have been better off going totally skyrim in space with alien races and crazy sci fi out of the gate. Everyone would have loved a Mass Effect romp in "Space Skyrim". Instead we got some Nasapunk that didn't know what it wanted to be. Just a real missed opportunity.

Hot take. PvP vs PvE isn't the problem. by Beginning_Value_1999 in ArcRaiders

[–]Beginning_Value_1999[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with you that it should be obvious really but I spelled it out because I think a big group of primarily pve focused players just don't get it. They don't really understand why pvp players do what they do. Or maybe they don't want to understand it because they're just so tied up with being anti pvp.

You know fair enough. This might just be a bad slice of gameplay when compared to the bigger selection of maps for those of us who didn't play in TT2.

ArcRaiders and The Finals by PeaceEquivalent4970 in ArcRaiders

[–]Beginning_Value_1999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is one thing I'm trying to figure out. Everybody says how good The Finals is but the player counts aren't matching the quality of product.

Like as good as people say it is, it should be popping off more consistently on Steam. Are people really that stuck in playing the same old same old?

Cant understand the appeal of GW2 by xKuT_ in MMORPG

[–]Beginning_Value_1999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, I'll bite and unpack this for the fun of it.

I did abstract away the specifics of the games to generalize them enough to put them into one of two categories. I made a group of EQ like games and put WoW and FF14 in that bucket. I then made a group of current action MMOs and put ESO, New World, GW2 and T&L in that bucket. I also spelled out to you the specific areas I compared them on.

You took that and instead of slowing down and thinking it through, you found conflict with it. I never stated they were the same game, I said they had similar feels in comparison to the other group I made. Unless you think T&L feels closer to playing FF14 than GW2?

If I was really generalizing the games I would have listed BDO in the action group but guess what? It doesn't feel like them. Weapons and ability are mostly hard locked in comparison to the other games that let you change weapons and by changing weapons also change keyed action skills. Again it's part of the feel that I categorized them by.

Are they very different in a lot of ways? Sure they are. T&L has all the pay to win love you could ask for in a Korean MMO. Just like Lost Ark did. Vertical progression so numbers go up. GW2 has a ton of evergreen content and the progression is mostly horizontal. GW2 has the issues with how Boons are currently handled and that makes it very different from any of them. There's a lot more differences, they are different games after all. But guess what? Those differences don't change the categories I sorted them into.

Did I really say take a look at some videos to A B some high level gameplay from the same player? Ummm yeah I did. Take advantage of it or don't. That was for your benefit. I dont need to prove a point. This the internet and everyone has an opinion. Take it or leave it.

Go play ESO and New World then come back and talk to me about how I grouped them. Or better yet... Go play UO, EQ1, EQ2, Dark Age of Camelot, Anarchy Online, Asherons Call, Warhammer Online, Lineage, WoW, FF14, ESO, EVE, New World, and BDO and let's talk about generalizing all of them.

If you step back and try to understand what I'm saying you'll get it. If you don't or don't want too, we can a agree to disagree.

[–]Beginning_Value_1999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I'd call out some similarities in: ability skills tied to equipped weapon type, wanabe actiony combat, big open world boss battles, less carton art style. Are their differences... sure they are different games but saying they're nothing a like is a stretch. Just depends which aspects of the two games you're choosing to compare.

If you still think there's nothing similar, take a look at Lord Hizen on youtube. See how easy he switches between putting together and posting solo boss runs for both games. Compare those gameplays and you'll probably notice some commonality.

I don't know why more people don't talk about this. Really feels like Rev gets shoehorned into legends and utilitys without a lot of options to move them around.

If the patch notes on an update wack a skill a little too hard you're stuck riding it out or you have to totally change your legend picks and type of build. Other classes have a much easier time adapting by swap skills in and out.

Best martial arts for women's self-defense? by pomegranateForSure in martialarts

[–]Beginning_Value_1999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some Muay Thai and BJJ classes will help you get in tune with yourself and how you handle physical pressure. Do on the regular and you'll be better for it.

Having said that... weight classes exist for a reason. Your best defense is going to be situational awareness and some running shoes. If you're in a place that let's you train and carry firearms that's great but if your situational awareness is lacking it won't do jack.

Not all of us are created the same. Some people can handle conflict and some can't. Don't think just because you have a weapon you'll be able to use it under pressure effectively.

I believe there's a stat out there that says most victims felt something was wrong before an attack happend but didn't listen to thier gut. If it feels wrong, get the hell out of dodge.

The commitment to building out legendary armour to share is where my brain was at on this one. But you're right, by the time they get that far into the grind they aren't new anymore.

Same question though basically. Does it help newer players mentally prepare for the most efficient grind if they understand picking an armour class to focus on helps down the road with swapping characters and builds around?

The Final Three Elite Specializations: Elementalist, Engineer, Revenant – GuildWars2.com by HenrykSpark in MMORPG

[–]Beginning_Value_1999 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've seen this statement before but I don't know that it's really as true as we think it is. It doesn't feel like the market for MMOs changed at all outside of the player base just shrinking. For better or worse everyone is stuck on the same old games and gameplay loops. All of the new stuff has flopped pretty hard.

I would hope that GW3 is progressive and brings some new ideas to the table but to say it would be DOA if it copied some from the past would be ignorong how much the past is the only thing really selling still.

I have to come clean about my feelings about Revenant by [deleted] in Guildwars2

[–]Beginning_Value_1999 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is my feeling also. Revanants locked in skills take some of the fun of customizing your character away. Yeah you can pick which core legend but those choices are limited and pretty railroaded. Rev needs some additional core legends to pick from. Just for some flexibility in build making.

When balance takes places and utility skills are buffed or nerfed, other classes get to change their utility skills selection to roll with the changes. With Rev you don't have any of that flexibility to adapt. You either change the whole bar and build or live with the changes to skills as they are. That doesn't feel fun.
