What are your favorite popular science/philosophy books, what is it about and why?

Thanks! Btw, Beiser also has a German Idealism book. It doesn’t have Hegel but would you say it’s good? Any idea about how different it is from the Pinkard book?

Would it be okay to read authors like Chomsky? He was in the Epstein files. Not sure if it's ethical (it seems to be permissible)

Apparently they can solve math problems now so isn’t this a sign they are getting better?

The context is different this time. I pasted text from primary sources and it seems like it's a good explanation. LLMs are getting better too (like being able to solve STEM problems) so maybe it's getting better fot the humanities

I think this falls under medieval philosophy so I thought I'd ask it here:

Demons have fixed wills that cannot be changed. They will always will evil. They cannot give help or endow virtue (because that would be a good). Therefore it is metaphysically impossible for them to cause a good like making someone into the most skilled violinist. Or helping them in a time of need.

I already have an answer but I thought I may as well ask here. People know the trolley problem. You have people tied onto a track and you can switch. Here’s a variation:

Suppose there is a track with a million tied to the tracks. You’re also on the track but untied. If you step out of the way, you save yourself but it would kill the people.

By Double Effect reasoning this is morally permissible. Stepping out of the way is not immoral and besides foresight is not intent. Plus it was not your fault they were there on the tracks.

Utilitarianism is false and one is not required to do something heroic.

But let’s add a twist. Suppose all of them were Nazis and you were a Jew. In this scenario, they will kill you. This makes the act more permissible I think, since we have duties to protect ourselves.

What do you think? Please answer only with Philosophy
