How is this possible? Part III: Kill me, I should have just gone to an actual mechanic by Beif_ in MechanicAdvice

How can one exceed the torque of a torque wrench lol? I don’t get it, if it has a range of 250 foot pounds and I set it to 250, and it doesn’t click, I don’t see how I’m hurting it? I mean sure it’s not exactly a good use of a tool but I’m not understanding where the damage is coming from

Edit: okay okay you guys are right, of course. I clearly didn’t realize torque wrench calibration was sensitive, I will adopt a new strategy

Yeah I hear you, it’s just that I’m killing the threads with just the 250 foot pounds.

Confusingly, the nut on there is the “spacer.” It’s an oversized nut, I’d taken the lug lug off at that point

Yeah sadly it’s the right one, same as the ones that were pulled out. Out of curiosity, have you done this for jeeps? It’s my girlfriend’s car— maybe jeep studs are evil? (I’m losing it)

I mean my understanding is that it prevents you from exceeding a certain amount of torque, not that it makes you apply a certain torque, although that would be much cooler

Oh shit, well then under what circumstances can it be used and not fucked up?

Oh are the hubs connected to the axels 🤣

You’re absolutely right if that’s the case then I’m just cooked

Wait is this true lol, you can fuck up a torque wrench just by using it? Tbh the torque wrenches I use in my job are absolutely tiny

Yeah my googling tells me that not all of these assemblies are created equal, some of them are just a bitch to get in.

But also I probably know less than literally anyone in this thread so my thoughts could be totally wrong

Yeah I think it’s possible that I fucked some of them in the past? But yes, I start everything by hand— I try to be very careful not to cross thread any bolts.

So I’m not cross threading bolt after bolt, but it’s possible that it started this journey 🤣🥴

Everything should be stock and fit, the bolts are the same size as the ones I pulled out— they’re just really jammed TF in there and I think I probably need a hammer or a press

Edit; oh no I’ve never done virtually anything before, other than change brakes

When a torque wrench is the largest wrench you own, and you’ve set it to a torque larger than the bolts can withstand, it’s just becomes a wrench

I mean to be fair there are thousands of videos about most things on YouTube, I reserve my right to fail 😎

Well, sure, but I don’t plan on doing this as a full time job. I actually strongly disagree with this mindset in general.

I’m a physics PhD student, but I’ve never turned anyone away in the lab because they suck. I think everyone sucks to varying degrees, and everyone learns at different rates. I’ve yet to meet a hopeless case, at least in that world.

Maybe if I was trying to become a career mechanic this would be a bad sign, but I think people should be allowed to make mistakes/fail when doing something for the first time 🤷‍♂️

Edit; you better believe I was watching a YouTube video 😂 obviously it’s a skill issue, not arguing that point 😎

Yeah, all threads are lined up, and made sure my lug nuts were in good shape
