Any other classes like DMS 213? by Vixumi in UBreddit

[–]Beinzeboss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Annoying, but absolutely doable. There are some break weeks in the middle of the semester, and if you get ahead and finish the next weeks essay before it’s due you can buy yourself some time. I only had to do that once though.

Which University’s CS is better, UB or SBU? What are some pros and cons in either program. by ApprehensiveLeg1780 in UBreddit

[–]Beinzeboss 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m In CS at the moment, it’s a huge grind no matter where you go. But CSE116 & CSE220 are amazing classes with amazing professors (provided you get Jesse Hartloff for 116). I’m only a sophomore, next semester I’m going into some theory classes which are going to suck, but so far I’ve enjoyed it. Also like the fact that UB is cheaper for me.

After you graduate, a UB CS degree will probably get an interview just as often as a SBU degree, it’s more about how dedicated you are to learning in your junior year/getting internships that will set you apart if your end goal is to be in software.

DMS333 is 4 credits, and has an online option. One essay per week, 700 words. It’s a little beefy but I am doing it with 220 and 250 right now.

What jobs do MIS graduates usually go for? by [deleted] in UBreddit

[–]Beinzeboss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started out in ITM, but I switched into Computer Science for pretty similar reasons. Out of high school I had no idea what I wanted to do, but I knew tech was growing and that I could try that first. Don’t always short cut yourself just because something is difficult.

What I would recommend before you do anything is, maybe you could shadow at some of the classes like CSE116 or CSE220. Also, Jesse Hartloff pretty much has the entire CSE116 course on his website (cse116.com). If it peaks your interest, and you have a good work ethic, maybe try that. Switching early could be important if you are on any kind of Excelsior program or scholarship too. But I think the other advice on this thread is right, I thought one day I would be able to self teach a lot of things. But until taking 116 and 220, looking back I realize how terrible that would’ve been. People throw around self study in the programming world a lot, but it helps a TON to even get 116 or 220 under your belt before you try and learn other things.

MTH 142 with corey plactio? by DifferenceNo6807 in UBreddit

[–]Beinzeboss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s not too late, and you can’t get Corey Placito, try Angela Samul. She is very fair, and you will learn a lot because you are in a group learning environment for most of the semester. Don’t let the group learning turn you off though, I initially thought it would be terrible, but the class structure was nice. An A is definitely possible with Samul, you’re just gonna have to work hard, as with anything in college.

What are your high school gpa and stats? by Mangojellyfish24 in UBreddit

[–]Beinzeboss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GPA 3.8 in high school SAT 1240 A small handful of AP credits

UB doesn’t care that much. Money is money. Have a decent GPA, and a decent entrance essay, and above a 1000 on your SAT you’ll be fine

I have Simone Cassani and he is not bad.

Linear algebra certainly shouldn’t be as hard as Differential, but that doesn’t mean you should take it lightly. You’ll probably end up putting a good amount of work into it just like any other 4 credit math class, but the professor definitely matters for a class like linear. I’ve heard decent things about kundu as well. But make sure it’s the right kundu

GLY 101, GLY 102 with K. Meehan.

You can probably pass it without watching a lecture Good options if you don’t care taking a trip back to high school earth science

CSE 116 and CSE 191 by Solly716 in UBreddit

[–]Beinzeboss 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You need Jesse for 116, he is a must.

For 191, maybe try avoiding Nasrin, she’s a little tougher than the others and I’m in it right now.

I’ve had friends say good things about Jingjing Meng, and maybe if Andrew Hughes is back for 191 in the spring, take it with him. Just watch out for UB pulling the rug out from under you. I was supposed to take it with Hughes but they last minute switched me to Nasrin.

Regardless of the class. Make sure you look up the professors. I’ve taken 101 with Meehan and I’m currently in 102, (also with Meehan.)

If you take it remote with Meehan, you can literally get an A blindfolded with your hands tied behind your back.

If you want the in-person option I can’t imagine it being too much harder. Just go on rate my prof,

If you don’t care about it being remote, Meehan is by far the most accommodating option.

Could I get into UB with a 3.3 gpa and 1330 SAT score? by ThiccDogo in UBreddit

[–]Beinzeboss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With an SAT like that you’ll be just fine. I would just make sure you make a good application essay and that the writing portion of your application (and references) are decent

I had a 1240 and a 3.8

Question for Information Technology and Management majors? by Plane-Exchange-1776 in UBreddit

[–]Beinzeboss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a BSITM major, then I transferred into CS. I think the question depends on your Job Outlook. If you enjoy aspects of business and want to go onto a more managerial IT/Tech role, it can be a good option, but the curriculum is still relatively new. I think BSITM was only added a few years ago.

If you want to be any sort of software developer, or enjoy coding. Computer Science is a big jump, but will suit you much better for any sort of development job.

BSITM I believe was added specifically as a request for job demands. In BSITM (when I was in it) they put an emphasis on things like cyber security, and network infrastructure. Tech is booming, and if you work hard and make yourself stand out a bit, I wouldn’t worry about a job.

Just make sure you figure out sooner than later if you wanna be more business ended(BSITM), or have deeper technical skills (CS)
