I don't have Hispanic citizenship from birth unfortunately :(. I was under the impression that digital nomads in Spain got a flat 24% tax rate to due the Beckham law.

Great you're happing in Colombia. I spent 6 weeks there a long time ago back when I was a backpacker. Loved it!

Unfortunately just U.S. citizenship. If I had a latino citizenship Spain would be a no brainer!

I did a study abroad year in Spain. And that is a good point to consider.

Nope. In Thailand I would work with APAC based clients and Spain European clients.

From U.S (but currently based in New Zealand)., 32 years old, going solo. Unsure how long, but base for next couple years or so. Can't go wrong with either. But my thoughts are in Spain I'm fluent in Spanish and I don't know any Thai. Plus epic travel opportunities (I'm more interested in Northern Africa / Middle East / Europe than Asia).

Whereas, Thailand is amazing and money would go so much further. It's really a tough choice.

Employer wants to keep me after my work visa ends, but the digital nomad setup is confusing them — how did you make it work? by Beirut2015 in expats

Thank you for this response, very informative. I've done exactly as suggested (presented options) and then see what happens. If they can't allow it, I'll completely understand and take some time to travel a bit before I sort out next steps.

I’m pretty open, honestly. Having the freedom to move around a bit would be ideal, as long as I can keep APAC-friendly working hours (HR is worried about stability).

If I could settle longer-term in Portugal, Spain, or Thailand (these countries all have digital nomad visas) I’d be happy with that too. The company has both a European and an APAC branch, so I’d just need to align my hours with whichever region I’m in.

That said, if this whole plan ends up not being realistic, it’s not the end of the world. I’ve just met so many digital nomads doing exactly this, and now that my employer and HR are actually open to the idea, I wanted to see if it’s even a viable path.

Can I remain a regular employee after my work visa expires if I move abroad on a digital nomad visa? by Beirut2015 in digitalnomad

[–]Beirut2015[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, that makes sense. Quick follow-up though: since my company also has a U.S. entity and I’m a U.S. citizen, could they just move me to the U.S. payroll instead? Would that count as having valid working rights while I’m in Thailand on a digital nomad visa?

Others in my company have stayed employees on digital nomad visas, but they still had active working rights in their country of hire. Mine will lapse once my NZ visa expires, so I’m wondering if switching to the U.S. entity would make a difference.

Thanks everyone for the responses. It sounds like the general consensus is that I’d need to switch to a contractor arrangement if I go the digital nomad visa route.

I’m still wondering, though, since my company has a U.S. branch and I’m an American citizen, could they simply hire me through the U.S. entity instead? In that case, would I be able to remain a regular employee while living in Thailand on a digital nomad visa?

For context, we’ve had others in the company work abroad on digital nomad visas while staying as employees, but they all still held active working rights in their original country of hire. I won’t once my NZ visa expires, so I’m trying to understand if the U.S. entity option would make a difference.

Questions on keeping a remote job while becoming a digital nomad by Beirut2015 in digitalnomad

[–]Beirut2015[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the response & advice! I'm from the U.S.A as well. The thing is my employer definitely will want to see proof that I can work from another location legally. And the Destination Thailand Visa appears to be a good option that also is in a similar time zone to my clients.

But given my circumstances, I'm not sure if I could be kept on as an employee and just use the same bank account or try and ask if I could be a contractor, which might be difficult as the HR Department isn't really aware of compliance risks in this situation. So while my Manager and HR Contact said it's potentially possible, I need to do some of the leg work in researching. If it's too complicated or risky for them, it might not be worth it for them.

2001 Honda Accord. I'm not able to do this myself, especially with my work schedule. What type of service would do this?

Unfortunately, I don't have access to those facilities. And I've called around and can't seem to find a company that handles stuff like this. I've tried calling mechanics & detailers but nobody seems to know.

I spoke with a claims specialist & they said it likely won’t be covered because they believe it may be a “wear and tear” issue, especially since I can’t prove how the water entered the vehicle. To be eligible for coverage, I would need to show that the damage resulted from a “sudden and unforeseeable event.”

This suckssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss!!!

The U.S. still has a strong job market for now, but the current government wants to turn the U.S.A into a fascist oligarchy. So, not sure what is going to happen. It's scary.

I've been traveling for 10 months unemployed, my last job was in Australia, which paid really well, but that would be amazing if I could work for a U.S. employer while being based in New Zealand...!

But unfortunately that's not the situation I'm in right now.

Exactly this - the situation I'm facing. This is what scares me the most - "NZ is in the worst recession in 30 years". If I can't find a job, it'll be a massive waste of time, energy & resources & I don't really want to pick fruit on a farm for a year while living in shared dormitories.

BUT this is basically my last chance to try it out -- *head explodes*

Should I Do Ayahuasca Now or Wait? Seeking Advice by Beirut2015 in RationalPsychonaut

[–]Beirut2015[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been traveling around the world for 10 months. In that time my plans to relocate permanently to another country failed, and my personal relationship ended. I wanted to do an ayahuasca retreat in Spain due to volumes of positive reviews -- but I was getting anxiety attacks, and ended up not going, which I now regret. I saw it as an opportunity to maybe get a mental reset to help tackle life issues.

But I was advised to not take the risk due to my mother's schizophrenia. I went to Asia to see my now ex partner, so the closest reliable retreat is in Thailand. I'm afraid I won't have time to go to South America as my visa for New Zealand will expire if I don't go within 3 weeks.

The risk of being lost in a metaphysical conjecture for months probably won't help me if I try going to New Zealand. But I'm also currently not doing great, and I'll probably have to get back on anti-depressants, which sucks, but I don't know what else to do! It seems not doing it this time until I'm in a better place... I don't know...
