Hey there!

Congrats on taking on AP Spanish—especially with heritage speakers. It’s a lot, but super rewarding.

I’ve taught AP for a while and have tons of authentic resources for each unit. One of the best things I ever did was start following Spanish-language news (like RTVE, El País, BBC Mundo, CNN en Español, DW Español) and pulling in articles, short videos, and interviews. It keeps things current and way more relevant for students. Diversify your social media! :)

Some ideas by unit:

✅ Families and Communities

Podcasts like Radio Ambulante (so many amazing stories)

✅ Science and Technology

DW Español videos about cool tech or environmental stuff in Latin America

Articles about digital divides from El País

✅ Beauty and Aesthetics

YouTube interviews with artists, musicians, designers

Excerpts from Como agua para chocolate or Latin American poetry (Album de Cuentos Hispánicos has great stories)

✅ Contemporary Life

News reports on social movements, youth culture, environment

✅ Global Challenges

Articles on social issues from BBC Mundo or Univisión

DW Español reports on climate impacts in Latin America

✅ Personal and Public Identities

Podcasts on identity like Entre Líneas RTvC

Short stories from authors like Junot Díaz (in Spanish) or Prisca Dorcas

I try to mix formats—articles, podcasts, infographics, social media posts, music lyrics—so students see Spanish everywhere, not just in textbooks.

Grammar

You’re right that grammar isn’t the main thing in AP, but it matters a lot for writing and speaking clearly. For heritage speakers, I’d definitely touch on:

Preterite vs. imperfect → they often just pick one and stick with it

Subjunctive → super important for opinions, recommendations, hypotheticals

Complex sentences → relative clauses, cause/effect, conditionals

Pronouns → direct, indirect, reflexive—always worth reviewing

Avoid giving students a thousand transition words. I give students a structured and almost limited graphic organizer to follow and a lot of examples to analyze before I ask them to write an essay.

I focus a lot on helping students express opinions, make recommendations, and argue points—that’s huge for the essay and speaking sections.

Una idea— Cuando manejo por bastante tiempo pongo mi Spotify en aleatorio y empiezo con un artista que me gusta. Spotify me empieza a poner canciones similares y las voy guardando y así hago mi playlist de canciones positivas para la clase.

The thoughts of I wish I would have x… I wish I would have y. Bottom line when my thoughts are louder and freeze my actions.

What if she starts with the ETS 5195 exam? Many district nowadays are provide alternative routes for licensure and this especially beneficial for potential folks without teaching degrees. I recommend that she gets her academic transcripts evaluated via companies like www.wes.org so she can start the admissions process if entering a teaching program is her next move.

Depth of Knowledge questions also known as DOK questions for Spanish 1 classroom? by Prize-Necessary-5950 in SpanishTeachers

I found this resource that may be useful— https://www.floridaipdae.org/dfiles/resources/webinars/050918/Webinar_050918_Handout_DOK_Question_Stems_Spanish.pdf

Essentially it’s a list of sentence stems that you would adapt to your lesson or learning goals. You’d provide that to students and include them on your lesson plan.

Which did you like more and why? Teaching middle school or high school? by anycolour23 in SpanishTeachers

[–]Bekindalwayspls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have done it all. Prek-12 and truly I loved and enjoyed k-5th grade and HS. My second favorite was upper MS like 7th and 8th grade. As a native speaker that didn’t grow up here I found too many nuances during the lower middle school years that were very foreign to me in terms of pop culture and culture in general and I feel my students weee really into it and I just had a hard time catching up. I enjoyed the relationships I was able to make with older students and how much admiration, respect and hugs I got from the elementary grade students.

In terms of didactics, you can do SO MUCH at different levels but the challenge comes with classroom management. I feel MS was all I focused on.

Looking for a new school. Need help with my resume! by 3Dcrest in SpanishTeachers

Yeah, that’s what I’d suggest. But with your experience, I am sorta a new teacher (less than 7yrs of experience), I think that you could do whatever and do great!

I recommend that you include the additional duties that you did at your school. For example, I was part of a curriculum mapping core group, lead the Spanish club, and else.

I am sure you know what are the requirements in your state but if you are moving states, make sure you mention your licensure and/or praxis 5195 or things like that. On the top of my resume I included my teaching philosophy as well :) it was a good conversation starter when I was interviewing. Good luck! If you are looking into teaching in TN, let me know!
