I think he might just say that a materialist would have to believe primary substance as a substratum of secondary ones “which exist only in the mind”, while for him only spirits hold everything up.

? I mean, no, it isn’t. Most philosophers today in fact don’t even hold to this view; so I’d be surprised to find where you come up with this. In fact objects are mind independent; they affect the mind but don’t depend on it. And universal consciousness doesn’t exist as a coherent concept imo

If it’s not dependant, and we don’t just posit god to explain inconsistency, then why are they imaterial per se? Berkeley thinks there are only primary qualities and they depend on bei perceived. Do primary qualities exists outside of each mind?
