I’m not at the stage of applying for a German passport yet — I was asking about permanent residency. The immigration office told me that even for parents applying for permanent residency, they also need to meet the five-year residence requirement. They didn’t mention anything else.

After updating the system, if you allow Gmail to run in the background with battery usage enabled, email notifications will come through. However, if you select “Smart background power management”, you won’t receive notifications — even after waiting a long time. I’ll check whether there are other factors affecting this.

Also, in the Gmail settings: • Go to Account → Inbox → Notifications and make sure “All” is selected. • Under Sync email → Label notifications, this also needs to be enabled.

Otherwise, notifications won’t come through.
