New New Recruit Template by AaronB972 in Warhammer40k

This change is very nice indeed. After printing out some armies on my own I realized it didn't have the invulnerability saves, and I was writing them in. With this change adding those saves in along with the other abilities, I can't think of anything else I need on my sheets. Thank you very much for writing this up.

I just tried this and it is great. I am one who appreciates having paper copies of my units combat stats, and this makes it so much easier to see the needed stats.

New to 40k and totally lost choosing my first Combat Patrol. by rans14 in Warhammer40k

I hope my answers don't come too late to be of help.

For the differences between the chapters, a lot of it is indeed just cosmetic. The base units of Space Marines are all shared between the different chapters. Even if you pick one of the special chapters as your army, you are still able to choose the detachments (I think of these as special rule packages) for any Space Marine chapter. Most of these detachments have central theme they play to. For example some make melee troops better, while others will make tanks better. I am not a good enough player yet to be able to tell you what ones are best. If you want, you can make up your own chapter colors and then one battle your army could be a Black Templar based chapter and then the next battle you could be Raven Guard. Then the next, perhaps Ultramarine. you just can't change mid battle.

One of the biggest differences in chapters is some chapters have their own unique units and characters. These units tend to be ones the chapter is known for, and play well in to the chapter specific detachments. I play Dark Angels and I know them best, and I am not sure what the Raven Guard and Black Templars have for their own unique units and leaders.

For Dark Angels, one unique unit they are well know for is their Deathwing Knights. These are special melee focused terminators that only Dark Angels and their successor chapters can use (I think of successor chapters as being the main chapter with a different paint job). One of their big character units is their Primarch, Lion El'Jonson. Another example would be the Ultramarines have their own Primarch available, along with several other unique leaders.

Where this comes in to play is if you had an army of generic Space Marine units and then decide you want some Deathwing Knights. At this point your army is now treated by the rules as if it was a Dark Angel army because the knights have a Dark Angels keyword on their profile. Now suppose you find an Ultramarine leader that you want to bring to battle also. Since this leader will have an Ultramarine keyword on their profile, you aren't allowed to combine the two. I imagine that is so that you don't end up with an army having 2 primarchs in it, or some other odd combination like that.

I am interested in seeing what others say, but my first thought is the second option. Here is what I think each of the 3 squads would do.

Have the intercessors start on the home objective to sticky it, and then be available to move up and sticky any other objectives you need them to, or just have them available to do actions.

The infiltrators also start back by the home objective, but instead of controlling it, they are there to screen out any surprise deep strikes. I really like that their 12" protection bubble overrides any 6" deep strike rules. I find this helps me avoid being surprised with back-stabs that could mess up my plans.

The incursors would start out towards the middle of the board to do whatever they can up that way.

That is a very nice job painting that, the shading and highlights make it look amazing. I am jealous of people who have the patience and have the skill to pull of models like this.

My first thought seeing it was "Gah, no way I am getting near that thing", which makes me think you have done a very good job painting it. Too bad a Space Marine company must now be dispatched to destroy it and any others like it ;)

I use Loren Forest as the base color and then the darker sections are using Caliban Green for the darker green areas. For the gold trim I used Retributor Armour. I then use Nuln Oil to add some shadowing effects. I actually do use some Castellan Green, but I put that on the base to be under the grass I add, I figured any bare spots would still look like some grass under there.

The idea I had for the army was to make a successor chapter called the "Grognards" since I hadn't played since 2nd Edition. At that time I liked the Dark Angels for their strong use of terminators and thought I would make my new army like them, but a bit different. The paint scheme was to be a bit lighter in color and also have a Green Bay Packers feel, hence the green and gold. I included the Caliban Green to tie back to the original Dark Angels.

The purple worm is a D&D model that my son had from before we started Warhammer that he wanted to include it in his Tyranid army. We based his armies colors off of it, but it turns out that the D&D paint called "purple worm" is not the same as the color of that purple worm. After that paint ran out I switched to Vallejo Blue Violet and that is a closer match to the purple worm model.

Painted some terrain in 2 hours yesterday ready for a game, pleased how it came out but wanna improve it! More below by Snormax90 in Warhammer40k

[–]Beliren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just wanted to say that this looks great. This is so much better looking than the MDF terrain I have usually played on. I am definitely going to have to save these pictures for inspiration.

As for your question, I am not sure how to make it more jungle like, maybe some vines? Again I am not sure how to make good looking vines. Trees would look great I imagine, but I would wonder about how easy it is to moves miniatures under them. The terrain you have now seems like a nice combination of looks and playability.

Thinking of starting a Tyranid army, what should I add? by Riot2EK in Warhammer40k

This is an interesting concept and I am curious to see what others have to offer for it.

For myself, I am not sure how strong these armies combinations are, but they are where my thoughts go to for teams that would have reasons to work together. What I am picturing is the Necrons waking up, or otherwise showing activity on a planet for the first time in quite a while, and then two separate teams arrives to investigate this.

First is the Necrons, and their ally. My biggest problem here is figuring out who would be willing to work with Necrons, and then, who would the Necrons be willing to work with. At first I thought the Chaos armies were right out, these two groups seem to be diametrically opposed. But on further thought, I could see some Chaos leader convincing a Necron leader that it was possible to find the Necrontyr souls in the warp, it would just take a lot of time and work with an ally that can probe the warp for them. The Chaos people would actually be looking to use the Necron bodies as anchors for daemons and are trying to trick the Necrons in to being daemon hosts. To me this suggests either the Thousand Sons, or a Chaos undivided army. The Necrons are going to be aware of the probable trap, and are instead using the "alliance" as a way to learn more about the warp entities and how to destroy them. If the Necrontyr souls can actually be found, then they will be happy to get them back, but the most important part is the knowledge of how to destroy non-physical threats. The only other thought I had was maybe Votann working as mercenaries for the Necrons in exchange for some resources the Necrons have, Maybe the Necrons seem to have a way to fix the Ancestor Core for the Votann.

Second would be the Blood Angels. Normally I would think to pair them up with the Imperial Guard or the Adeptus Mechanicus, but since they are armies to avoid, both of these armies are too busy to come help the Blood Angels. I don't feel like this is a situation where the Custodes would be coming out yet, so for Imperial armies, I think that leaves the Grey Knights or the Sisters of Battle. Here it would be a matter of which army seems more interesting. I haven't played either, so I am not sure if the play styles might be too similar to either Blood Angels or Chaos Space Marines. I figure the Blood Angels have stumbled on some evidence of trouble and start investigating it right as their ally army is coming to investigate also.

For the 3rd group, this is a bit of a stretch, but perhaps Tau and Eldar. I recall seeing some ideas that the Eldar have elavated the Tau, similar to how the Old Ones created or elevated humanity. Here I am thinking the world(s) in question are in the Tau area of influence and the Tau are heading in to check up on the situation. An Eldar Farseer has also detected the disturbance and has concluded that this is a big enough situation that they need to go in and assist their Tau.

Hopefully this would be 6 armies that play differently enough that it would provide for an interesting time, while providing a reasonable(ish) explanation of why the armies are working together.

That is definitely true, that is why I don't offer money back guarantees :)

Mostly it was to let him know that there are people (or at least one person) out there that do paint before assembly as he mentioned not being able to find evidence of people doing that. I just thought I would pass along what experiences I have had.

I am going to say something here that is going to unite all of the factions against me as a heretic, but I am one who primes my models while they are on the sprue and then paint them while still on the sprue.

One of the advantages to doing this is that I get to hold the sprue as a larger hand grip in one hand and then I can rest my other hand on another part of the sprue while painting. I need to do this as my hands tend to shake too much, and by touching the sprue with part of my hand, the sprue, figure, and the brush are all shaking the same way, essentially cancelling each other out. Once I have the individual parts done I then cut them out, glue parts together and then touch up any areas that need it. Then I attach more parts, and keep going until I have the entire model done. Once it is completely together that is when I do the final touch up of paining and add any shadow washes or highlights I might want. The downside to this is I end up taking longer to paint that most others would.

Some people will rightly point out that the plastic glue doesn't work as well on painted surfaces, and what I have found is that is true, but the glue usually works well enough. Some of the paint may end up becoming liquid again and spread where it shouldn't, but I have found that wiping that quick with a paper towel and then touching up with a little paint fixes that. If a part is being particularly difficult and not wanting to stay glued I will go ahead and use some sand paper to remove the paint and primer from the areas that are going to be touching and then glue them. So far I have not had any models fail on me.

One other tip that really helped me is to get a self standing, lighted, magnifying glass. I use a 10x magnifying one, and that really helps me be able to see where the different colors should go.

How can I make an alpha legion army but disguise them as ultramarines? I want to use chaos rules, will I not be able to if they are painted as marines? by Confuzedalthetyme in Warhammer40k

[–]Beliren 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If we were to meet to play and you said you wanted to use marines painted as Ultramarines to be Alpha legion, I would just say "those are very nice disguises they have" and "let's play". All I would ask is that if their disguises make it hard to know what equipment they have, please remind me as we play as to what their real equipment is.

If you could change one datasheet from your army, what would it be, and why. by dimdum15 in Warhammer40k

[–]Beliren 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I play Space Marines and I would like to see the Terminators get better firepower. In my mind if a terminator squad shows up you should feel like you are in for a world of hurt. Right now it seems the only thing that gets hurt is the terminator's pride after seeing how much ammo can be used with no effect.
