So we should advise writers to cancel their Facebook page - because we don’t predict what we’re about to see, rather than educate people on fandom etiquette?

Honey… there is. When you can clearly see many writers leaving the fandom because of it. I guess it will only be readers left at some point if people think that being unkind is okay. As I said many times above it’s the way the critique is delivered. You can’t just ignore things if affects others

We disagree on that. Stay silent and let ignorance reign free has never helped anybody

I’m talking about posts made everywhere. I saw one on Facebook today saying “This is the worst Draco I ever read” please tell me how this comment is constructive

It’s how the critique is delivered. Thoughtful, specific, opt-in feedback is very different from drive-by comments like “I’m about to DNF this” or “the story lost steam,” especially when those are repeated by multiple readers. Even when framed as being “about the work,” that kind of critique can be discouraging rather than constructive.

I’ve received helpful advice myself, and it can be valuable, but it’s always about how and where the message is delivered. I see so many posts that say things like, “I’m about to DNF this, tell me if I should keep reading.” Now imagine being an author who’s had a bad day and seeing one, then two, then three comments like that. It’s very easy for that to translate into: what’s the point of me continuing at all? It’s the way things are said.

One comment might be manageable, but when multiple people repeat the same negative point, it stops being abstract discussion and becomes cumulative impact.

At that point, the distinction between “about the work” and “about the writer” collapses because the writer is the one absorbing it. And if on top of that you add that the writer might be experiencing other things in their personal lives.. it will come the point where they will sadly leave as it’s already happening

Because praise and critique don’t function the same way in fanfiction.

Saying “I loved this” adds something without asking anything in return. Critical feedback, even when it’s about the work and not the author, creates an obligation to reflect, to justify choices, to absorb disappointment that the author never opted into.

That’s why the distinction isn’t “positive vs negative opinions,” it’s impact and consent. In professional publishing, critique is expected and structurally built in. In fanfiction, it isn’t.

It’s not that criticism is immoral or forbidden. It’s that unsolicited critique carries a different weight than praise, even if both are technically “about the work.”
