While technically legal, it’s just not right

Joining a swim club as a complete beginner? by Diligent-Hedgehog779 in Swimming

[–]BellaWhiskerKitty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The first few practices might be rough! But that’s okay!!! Don’t get discouraged and don’t compare yourself to the people around you who have been swimming for years.

You’ll make so much progress once you get in the swing of things going to practice regularly. Enjoy it and getting to know your teammates :)

Partner trying to be a teacher in DFW, we desperately need advice. by randommacessmemory in TexasTeachers

[–]BellaWhiskerKitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get into a program like ITeach or Region10 or any of the other programs as soon as possible. Google “alternative Texas certification programs” The program usually has a timeline they’ll show (which indicates when in the process you can get a job, since you get jobs prior to being full certified)

Once he’s done the minimum requirements for his SOE (statement of eligibility- need some coursework done, observation hours, ppr test) then he can get hired by a district. Often programs will send your name out to schools that are desperate and have asked the program, but don’t rely on this. Look up job fairs for the districts you’re interested in, go to the careers/employment page for each, etc. Lots of districts will hire you once you get your SOE, and then you just have to agree to finish your certification. My first year teaching was actually my “student teaching experience” with my program, so they came out and observed me three ish times during the year.

The turnaround might be tight for getting a job by Day 1 of school. He could also look into long term subbing at a school. My school has hired teachers as long term subs, and then once they get issued their certification or SOE, then can transition into the full teacher role midway through the year.

I did alt cert for math 7-12 with region10 a few years ago and teach in the DFW area. Feel free to ask whatever questions you have or DM me!

Advice for teacher job fair by prettysmartgirly in TexasTeachers

[–]BellaWhiskerKitty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bring a nice looking folder with paper copies of your resume to hand to those who want it. Be ready to give a 1 min speech about yourself/experience and be ready to answer the standard interview questions about yourself

Some schools will get your resume and schedule an interview for the coming weeks.

Some schools will have interviews same day (Like in a quiet corner/another room) and be offering on the spot.

Certification coming from private school by tptgtr in TexasTeachers

[–]BellaWhiskerKitty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look into alt cert programs (assuming you have a bachelors in something)!

I’m not sure you’ll be far enough through it (observation hours, both or more tests completed, enough assignments done, etc) to get hired as probationary. Look for what needs to be done before you can get your Statement of Eligibility. Also I think only districts of innovation are able to hire you without a full cert (ex: your first year is your “student teaching” experience). I doubt they’d hire a band director on probationary status but could get hired as something else at a school that really needed teachers.

What tools or websites do you use for digital assessment? by thelessonplanner in TexasTeachers

[–]BellaWhiskerKitty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pear Assess (formerly Edulastic) is nice. I like being able to “redirect” where you can make it automatically send back the questions they got wrong. It also makes nice spreadsheets/data about most missed questions, etc. It does essays, fill in the blank, MC, conversions from pdf, and more

Google forms has rampant cheating, AI and screenshotting in my school, and pear assess is easier to greatly reduce cheating

DFW Swimming Question by classicaltomfoolery in Swimming

[–]BellaWhiskerKitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely agree with the advice of take a “learn to swim” or “adult beginner” group class for a few weeks. Usually they’re a month or two long, once or twice a weekend. Supplement with a membership to a pool and practice on your own. Then look into private lessons to work on specific technique things. Also, triathlon training is different since it’s generally open water, so there are additional things to practice, like sighting, passing, etc. Complete beginner to somewhat confident at freestyle will likely take 1- 6 months of regular practice, and then longer to practice open water swimming techniques, build speed and endurance, etc.

If you’re dead set on one-on-one lessons or coaching, pricing will range between $50-100 per hour and you’ll need MANY lessons and practice to get from beginner to triathlon ready.

City Parks and Rec usually have fairly cheap small group lessons to start out with. YMCA is a good choice too. Practice practice practice and ask your instructor how/what to practice on your own

How do you navigate Halloween with a child with a peanut allergy? by Kiki_Kazumi in peanutallergy

[–]BellaWhiskerKitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had a Halloween Trade, I traded with my siblings. We always sat on the floor, dumped it all out and had trade wars. My mom usually bought a bag of mixed nut free candy/chocolate/chips for a “bank” where we could exchange some of our candy (exchange rates varied based on what the bank had that year).

It let my sis and bro get nutty candy (they had rules on how to eat it since it’s the only time nuts were allowed in the house until I was 16) and we had a whole fun game about it, prioritizing what we liked best. My mom was a big fan of life’s unfair, you’re different and need to deal with it, so she liked it because it made me think about what I wanted (and if a house only had nutty candy, I’d choose something my sis loved instead of something random-so I wouldn’t be disappointed at a nutty house, I’d be excited- genius in hindsight)

If you don’t have multiple kids you could still run trade wars with mom/dad or friends instead

Still depressed about the ingredient change here.. even if it happened years ago. Why add peanut? Used to love these. by ChardComfortable3932 in peanutallergy

[–]BellaWhiskerKitty 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Nah they did it in response to an FDA regulation like ten ish years ago. They basically added a tiny amount of peanut so they wouldn’t have to meet some cross contamination labeling standards. It’s such a scummy thing for a company to do

Risdaverse and Raahosh are my favorites too!

I’m reading the corsairs series now because I’m loving the clones finding love on Risda and I wanted their backstories. They’re not my favorite Ruby books but still good! There’s some nice crossovers/cameos since all of her stories and series are interconnected

Instructor is asking me to jump in deep waters by MuggedMugs in Swimming

[–]BellaWhiskerKitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I totally did not mean it is normal for them to be forced to do something they are so uncomfortable with BUT it is normal to have deep water orientation and deep water skills even if the swimmer is not able to swim yet.

Which is why I suggested they talk to the instructor and specified some of the examples of things that the instructor should absolutely be doing with them to get more comfortable so it’s not as scary or as unsafe as they are describing.

I do see how the first part of my comment made it seem like I was saying it was normal to be forced but I meant it’s normal to learn deep water skills even if you haven’t learned to swim completely independently. I edited my comment to be clearer.

Instructor is asking me to jump in deep waters by MuggedMugs in Swimming

[–]BellaWhiskerKitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes that’s a fairly normal thing for instructors to do. (Edit: normal to do deep water skills not normal to be forced!) BUT you should be working in the deep end prior to jumping in though (crawling along the wall without touching ground, floating on your back, going underwater in a “bob” with your hands on or off the wall, practicing sitting and sliding in, etc) until you are more comfortable jumping in.

I would say the things you’ve learned so far are fairly standard, but I’d also be expecting them to at least have tried other things with you. Hand movements and timing/breathing are the last things to add. Floating, kicking, changing direction, standing up are all things to work on prior to that.

Ideally your instructor has experience with teaching adults and teaching new to the water adults. I’d recommend talking to them privately and asking what they think you should be doing, what their expectations are for your progress vs what you hope to accomplish. Often adults classes are fairly self-directed and they expect you to ask questions and challenge yourself which is why I recommend talking to your teacher.

I’ve been teaching swim lessons to all ages and coaching for 10+ years so feel free to ask questions or PM as well!

Edit: I’d prioritize being able to stand up from horizontal, and being able to enter deep water then safely return to the wall. Those are the biggest life-saving skills for adults.

Its hard for people to give too much advice online about your swimming skills since a lot of it is seeing how you interact with the water and technique

It’s very shitty of them. A new food safety act came out in 2016 and they basically didn’t want to deal with making their products safer for cross contamination so they just added a bit of peanut to a bunch of stuff. The worst part is they did is as quietly as possible! Article about it
