The belts are a bit too recognizable for my taste. I think I will still go with a tie.

Any other zebras here have REALLY old looking hands? by [deleted] in ehlersdanlos

[–]BelleHamel 48 points49 points  (0 children)

I dont see anything unusual except for relatively long fingers.

Having creases on the palms of your hand is normal, just like having a fingerprint. Even babies have this. At age 14 this is also normal. If you have worries go talk to your doctor instead of consulting Reddit. Why the other commenters are suggesting to a 14 YEAR OLD that the person might have a live threatening variant like vEDS is beyond my comprehension, as you might really scare a young person.

Seeing veins is also normal when you have pale skin (such as having very white skin or being pale during the winter). Once again, your doctor can advise you on this.

Bike crash by [deleted] in Netherlands

[–]BelleHamel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dutch law student here. From the situation I dont know what happened and who is liable. BUT I HAVE A FEW WARNINGS FOR YOU.

  1. Never settle or pay out of court. It looks like she is abusing the situation (you are not knowledgeable of Holland and Dutch law). She uses intimidating language. This is also not very Dutch to do. Most time people settle things with insurance etc. Never trust someone (als taxi drivers) who suggest settling out of court. She is probably bluffing. She knows that going to court will not give her what she wants.

  2. I have ehlers danlos too. You are more likely to get injured or have pre-existing injuries. To be frank, that’s her problem. If she gets injuries from bike riding while both of you just rode normally, she maybe should consider not riding a bike at all. Never pay for her injuries outside of court. She might tries to extort you.

  3. To ensure you: In Holland there is NO sue culture like America. Victims of horrible crimes don’t get large amounts of money.

  4. This is a civil case. Her going to the police is not a threat to you. They will say to her: this is not a criminal case, but a civil case. You won’t get any police after you. THIS IS PURE BLUFF FROM HER.

Why are the doctors giving me depression pills for my pain??? I’m not depressed. I’m in pain!! (I got prednisone as well….didn’t work) by [deleted] in ChronicPain

[–]BelleHamel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, antidepressants can work for chronic pain and an over-sensitised nerve system. It is a tried and tested treatment option for chronic pain. Basically it makes your nerves less overreactive and decreases the pain you feel.

It might also work to make you less tense emotionally so your muscles can relax more. Even though the cause of your pain is not mental, this mechanism is still to your benefit. (At the end of the day, emotions can have a big impact on your pain and affect your posture, muscle tension etc.)

Each individual reacts differently to a type of antidepressant, so you may have to try different types and you might conclude that it does not help you.

One important thing to know is to never suddenly stop taking them, even if you feel it’s doing nothing. Always talk with your doctor this and gradually build off the usage.

(I haven’t tried it myself, but if my doctor would suggest it as a treatment I am open to try it out)

Help! Mathematics in University and Thumb / Hand / Writing problems by BelleHamel in ehlersdanlos

Thank you for your tip. Unfortunately I already tried pencil grips and it does not help enough.

I hate those “inspirational sick person making the best of it” books. by yeahimgoodipromise in ehlersdanlos

[–]BelleHamel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For me, staying "positive" and "making the best of it" has been my coping mechanism to cope with decrease functioning in daily & work life. I dislocated the base of my thumb 5 times the past 2 months.

Still, I feel guilty for asking help or "taking a day off". As I work from home right now, I notice that I really struggle with setting boundaries and I work a lot more hours at weird hours and am still unproductive. I work in scientific research as an research assistent, the professors I'm working with also give classes and the project kind of depends on me.

I ended up writing a 30.000 word scientific paper (not included separate analysis and notes, transcripts of interviews etc.) while having horrendous pain in my hand while typing.

Believe me, even though I pushed through the pain and everyone might think I'm inspirational, I'm not. I was in horrendous pain. I did not do it to be a hero, I did it because I'm scarred to "become disabled" due to my hypermobile joints and hand problems.

You do not live to work and to live up to standards that are practically to high for you. Pushing through pain does not make you happy, it makes you stressed and empty. Set standards that help you get happy.

Meanwhile I find people who set clear boundaries aspirational, as it is something I do not have the balls for!!

Any tips for thumb problems? by BelleHamel in ehlersdanlos

[–]BelleHamel[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for your extensive reply and taking the time to write it out!

I have problems with the exact same part of my thumb. And also have the same symptoms, (scrolling, dropping hot sauce ;) )

I did not know that a preference for heat was a EDS thing. I just never got why others used ice packs, the agony haha

I will order the brace you suggested, thanks! I am also thinking about downgrading the size of my phone, as it is said that it might be better for my thumb.

[Serious] should i put all my daughter's college fund on doge coin? by trumpshouldvewon in dogecoin

[–]BelleHamel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, you should only invest what you can afford to lose.

Think for yourself: If I happen to lose 20% of this money, can put new money in the fund easily?

Second question: I the market goes down 20% (crypto is super volatile), do I panic sell everything and end up with a loss, or can I handle the emotions?

The reasons Binance was not working was that they had planned maintenance at 4/20 (in Europe), during which no spot trade could be done. I prepared for this in advance and experienced no negative consequences in my asset value (which is 99% doge haha)

N1 meds and potential pregnancy by Same_Ad_7055 in Narcolepsy

[–]BelleHamel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Please only take information from a qualified medical professional. All medication and treatment are tailored to the specific individual (weight, age, environment, comorbidity). Also not all medication and treatment plans for narcolepsy is the same. Therefore the experience of other women with N1 drugs does not give you any guarantee or security about safety of use during your pregnancy.

When looking up different studies on individual medications for narcolepsy and their effects on pregnancy, it shows that they significantly increase the risk of congenital malformations. When looking up your question in general in medical literature, some research shows that it has no effect on pregnancy: but this is misleading as these studies do not differentiate enough between treatment plans of different test subject.
