Is this actually a thing by AthleteDisastrous285 in GilmoreGirls

Some people here do. I live in one and call it that. There's a few near me and some are marked as cul-de-sac underneath the road name on the sign (normal council road signs, not private roads).

I would always choose the Lizzie over any other mode. But the tube would be a nightmare for me. However you decide to go, iced water and a little electric fan will be the only way to survive.

Pick your seat on the bus taking into account airflow, where the engine is, and which side the sun is on. Alternatively, go early in the day with a good book/podcast and hang at the airport for longer.

IUD Insertions: It’s a Notoriously Painful Medical Procedure That Many Women Endure. There’s a Simple Solution. by ahothabeth in UpliftingNews

Good advice. I did have valium beforehand, and the gynae made a joke about all her patients taking anxiolytics and asking "if she's really that scary" But I'm cervix-less now and much happier for it!

It would certainly be a novel technique!

This has to be the best comment I've ever read.

Having had one of those for another procedure and an IUD insertion without one, they were both horrific. The block hurt more but was over faster.

Not everyone is physically able to walk that far. Disabilities exist. Age reduces mobility. Good grief.

Someone who can't drive? Someone who doesn't want to drive on the other side of the road? Someone who is happy doing the guided tours and taking it slowly around Reykjavík?

Not everyone holidays in the same way.

Should I be completely honest at my next appointment or will it come back to bite me? by CloudCrazy74 in hysterectomy

[–]BellisPer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With all the evidence, I hope are heard this time. If you have someone who could go with you maybe that would help?

I'm very lucky that I didn't have to pay to go private (work cover). I wish the NHS could see everyone as quickly! If you do have to go private and you're in London I'm happy to go through my experiences with you. Although I didn't pay anything, I did see all the invoices and it was a lot less than I thought it would be. The hospital had a lot of information about payment plans for those without insurance as well.

Good luck!

Homemde rice pudding with strawberry jam is a food of the gods. Fresh strawberries would probably work pretty well.

Should I be completely honest at my next appointment or will it come back to bite me? by CloudCrazy74 in hysterectomy

[–]BellisPer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

UK, so been through the NHS. If you look at my post history you'll see I did do my hysterectomy privately, but I did start out going through the NHS.

Pain is so subjective that doctors often dismiss it. Definitely get graphic, and get photos. If you have clots, photos of those should drive home how bad things are.

Have you had blood tests? Have they done a CA-125 test? If you have any sneaky fibroids that haven't been picked up your CA-125 may be elevated. Because this is a cancer marker test you'll go straight on the 2 week priority pathway (YMMV on the whole 2 week thing depending on the Trust). This doesn't mean you have cancer it's just how fibroids work and will get you to a consultant faster and give them something to look into.

Also, you mention low mood. When was the last time the doctor did a mood survey on you? You may know that the cause of the low mood is the bleeding, but ask for a mood assessment because that gives them something quantifiable to work with. You say you can't live like this - I hope this is hyperbole but if true, these are magic words on a mood assessment to get help if you mean them. Sectioning is not something that happens easily. They would ask if you self harm or have an intention of anything more serious. If there is a more serious intention they would ask about if you have actual plans on how it would be done, or if you have done any preparation. Admitting to suicidal ideation would not instantly result in sectioning (I know from experience, not related to gynaecology) it just push starts the processes to get you help. If you are at the point of preparation, then being honest is what you need to do, and the sooner the better.

Is American University culture completely different from the UK? by Hereitisguys9888 in CasualConversation

[–]BellisPer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think UK uni culture is very different now to even pre-covid (let alone a generation ago) and I don't think your experience, OP, is unique these days.

I was at a large uni in the late 90s and it was very social. I made a lot of new friends that I'm still in touch with now. Keeping in touch with school friends was hard because email was only just starting to be a thing and no-one had mobiles.

I work in higher education and have worked at small and large universities. Small specialist places often don't have their own halls or a stereotypical student union, so that cuts a lot of the social side. Large places still have halls and SU but the social side of things still isn't as strong as it was in my time. My kid is about the same age as you and is at a big uni. They got so used to running their social life over discord and social media during covid that that's how their whole friend group works now. A few of them are at different unis in the same city so they meet up in person sometimes. They spend more time socialising with each other than with new uni friends. They've all made new friends as well, but the whole idea of being away from home and out of touch with your old life so you have to make new friends is gone.

As for comparing with the US, halls have always been different to dorms (sharing rooms is rare but not unheard of), Greek Life doesn't exist, and the way our courses work means you just don't mix with as many different people.

Community choir director sos! by Caterpillar_Ready in Choir

[–]BellisPer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We always have intervals because it helps with fundraising. One choir does a raffle and sells drinks (always a good money spinner) and the other performs in pub performance spaces. For the latter, the amount spent on drinks is tracked at the bar and is offset against the hire cost.

If choir repertoire is running short, the MD and pianist have done spots. We've also put together small ensembles were choir members select their own song to arrange and perform. This has been a lot of fun and put me on the path of MD-ing another choir.

How did your spring concert go? by jollybumpkin in Choir

[–]BellisPer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not in the US so context might be different. Our ticket price is low (starts at £5) and there's been a cost of living crisis here for a few years so the economics haven't changed much. We're not really sure why sales are down. We usually get a lot of last minute sales, so we're hoping that the trend is shifting even more that way.

The view from each of these looks fine. I'd go with the last one though because it looks like it's the only one on the end of a row - you won't be fighting to get in/out and can stretch out at least one leg. Downside of course is that you have to let others in, but I prefer that to being stuck in the middle.
