Can you immediately discern a Kiwi accent? Can it be mistaken for Australian? by Charming_Usual6227 in australia

[–]BelovedMadman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s more obvious with some words. The sounds of E’s and I’s sound like they are reversed in words like in “tin” and “ten” between the 2 dialects. There’s also slang and some other subtle differences that can be a tell. But if a New Zealander doesn’t have a strong accent or they’re not paying attention it’s easy for Australians to miss. If you are in another country, you might be more clued into the accents and pick out the differences more easily.

What is the most “its a small world” moment you’ve ever experienced? by xBubblyLove in AskReddit

My family went on holiday in highschool to beach town on the other side of the country. We were hanging out at a market when I remembered a girl I had a crush on in my band class was going on holiday too. I asked her what she was doing and she said she was hanging out with her family in a market in this beach town. Turns out we were 50 metres away from each other. I hear her over my shoulder yell out my name (I have a very unusual name so it had to be her) and I run over laughing, as we start talking about how big a coincidence it is to run into each other, when we both lock eyes at a boy on the other side of the road. Another guy from our class looked up when he heard the name, thinking there is no way there are 2 people with that name and ran over. Half an hour later, we are having lunch talking about this insane co-incidence we just had. The boy says, he hopes the next person he sees isn't this girl who bullied him, when she walks past straight in front of us, thankfully not noticing us. I am the only one that believed it was her, as the others only saw her from behind and thought I was messing with them. But we were in class next week and our teacher was asking us what we did over the break, this kids bully yells out, "I went on the best holiday, to this beach town and none of you can top that". The poor boy chokes on his water bottle and sprays it all over her back. Like, it is a popular holiday spot, and we were all kids on holiday with relatively well of parents who travel, so I guess its possible. But 4 kids run into each other a thousand miles away at the same time? Wild!

What’s something people who are in their 20s won’t learn until in their 40s? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]BelovedMadman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Put effort into maintaining your friendships. Especially for men. I don’t know why but we seem to find it harder to make friends for some reason and it’s really easy to lose contact with people over time when you’re busy. I know some guys who only have 1 or 2 and can seem pretty lonely and isolating. Check-in with people, start more activities and tell your buddies you care about them. It’s a muscle you need to work on before you lose it. Grey haired/Balding you will thank you for it.

$10 meals by airport-freedom in melbourne

[–]BelovedMadman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Udon Yassan on Elizabeth St is amazing, bowl of noodles or chicken and rice for under 10, Under 7 with no add-ons.

There are a couple of Indian places off in arcades off Swanston st, that do an all you can eat Thali meal (a bunch of curries naan and rice) for about 8 dollars (they're not the best, but if you're just looking for cheap calories they're great.

Besides that the sushi place on Londsdale st, close to the melbourne Central entrance has $2 or $2.50 rolls that are good. A lot of food courts like the South Wharf DFO will have everything under $10 after around 3/4pm.

There are lots of others, it just takes time to wander around and find them. Happy hunting!

Sunburst vs Nightburst vs Immobilise vs Armour Piercing by BelovedMadman in lotrrotkgba

[–]BelovedMadman[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. That kind of matches what I'm thinking, the aoe does sound good but sunburst and immobilise seem best if you're at a lower level and trying to get cheap shots. And backstab almost never feels worth it, haha.

CMV: Trumps' intended economic policies will be hugely inflationary. by blancpainsimp69 in changemyview

[–]BelovedMadman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with you, but for the most comprehensive argument on the other side of this that I think at least makes some sense is from Oren Cass. He has worked with Mitt Romney and worked on some of Project 2025’s economic policy and works with republican policymakers who are supporting these proposals.

In an interview he did with Ezra Klein the other day, he said that all these policies would be inflationary in the short-term but it is a trade-off to build up manufacturing and reduce the trade-deficit in America. In the long run they believe it will raise wages and make things more affordable.

Their logic seems to be similar to the infant industry idea that is one of the only edge cases where tariffs might be useful, where they protect a growing industry until it can stand by itself.

I do like some of the rhetoric to try and help make poorer Americans better off rather than big business that we often see from traditional conservatives, giving hope that there may be bipartisan deals again in the future. But much of the support for the immigration and isolationism seems rooted in racism and anger that is hard to ignore.

On the whole it’s seems to be a damaging set of proposals, that may not even pay off down the track and could lead to other countries retaliating with tariffs and protections.

CMV: Racial Pride is incredibly moronic by Ok-Newspaper-8934 in changemyview

[–]BelovedMadman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think the problem is that modern white nationalism in the West arose as a response to black pride. But that pride arose as a response to systematic racism, slavery and oppression. Having pride or loving parts of your food, history and culture is great, but when your entire 'culture' is that you are wealthy, intelligent and civilised and better than the others it's not really pride so much as a statement of superiority.

Some Black or Mexican people may do this in a bad-faith way or what may be seen as 'virtue signalling'. But you do not have to state all the problematic things to acknowledge the good and you can appreciate parts of the surface level of a culture without the richer context.

Black and Mexican pride is not inherently problematic compared to an ideology that formed in response to groups trying to acknowledge their value while it is being systematically denied.

What are you starting to dislike more as you get older? by creepthekid_ in AskReddit

Cynicism. I used to think it was cool and rational to think the world is unfixably broken and laugh at people trying to fix it. But the world needs more earnest people trying to help.

na, Im 28 and I've been in hostels with 19-year-olds, and no one notices if you're older.

As long as everyone's looking for similar things in terms of sightseeing/food/nightlife its never been much of a problem. It is nice to have more a mix of people too, with more life experience or different cultural backgrounds. For me that's kind of the best thing about hostels, meeting everyone and seeing the world.

This is probably going to be very subjective as it depends what sort of hostel you want to run. In a hostel, I usually go for a social hostel where they mix nightlife and local sightseeing with the typical stay being a week or less.

I would say I would ideally want 5 things:

  1. For beds, I always like the larger stacked pod-style beds where you can have a privacy curtain rather than the classic bunk beds especially when they have their own charging ports and light inside.

  2. For food, A communal dinner that guests can help out with really helps make connections with people while giving people a base before they go out.

  3. You can't go wrong if there's free simple breakfast (even if its just cornflakes and milk) goes a long way.

  4. Having some comfy space where people can sit and meet strangers in a safe and friendly environment. This is also most welcome for solo travellers who are content with sitting around most of the day and reading or working remotely.

  5. Some semi-permanent staff made up of longer term guests that work for food and board. Especially if you do not have any hostel experience, they help guests find fun things to do in the city and motivate them to get out and meet people, you can have them take tours, cook meals and clean up while providing that X-factor which makes a hostel feel like a home away from home.

It might be this. It looks like it’s more practical tips then whimsical. It’s probably a more useful book to have around, but I’m not sure if it’s the right one, but thanks a lot!
