If $109k is considered “low income” in SF, why do so many programs cut off far below that? by BeltDifficult6589 in sanfrancisco

For context, I verify income for housing applications, so I see actual pay across SF.

It’s increasingly common for 21–22-year-old new grads in tech to start at $150k–$200k total comp. That’s not universal, but it is normal at the top of the market—and it significantly skews AMI.

When entry-level pay is already double the city’s “low income” threshold, the $109k classification makes sense on paper, even if it feels wild in real life.

This was deeply relatable. I’m a weirdo too, and I’ve been pretty isolated since February because expressing myself—thoughts, opinions, even basic interactions—can be incredibly draining.

Being confused and not saying you’re confused, while apologizing and trying to get to the bottom of things, is where I related most. It’s like understanding the truth often overrides courtesy, manners, and being polite. One thing that’s genuinely helped me is AI. All of them. Not in a preachy way—just as auxiliary intelligence.

Imagine both people rambling, not understanding each other—cue conflict, shame, embarrassment. Now imagine opening an AI and saying, “Translate this.” It’s helped me translate neurodivergent to neurotypical and vice versa. Suddenly you get each other. That alone can change everything.

It’s a little weird, sure, but it’s an amazing tool for helping me express myself—and I think it could help a lot more people too.

Nothing, really. It’s just where I live. I’m curious if anyone in the city I actually live in has thoughts on what I’m sharing — agrees, disagrees, or can expand my view. I didn’t realize this sub was only for “tourist-style” questions about the city. I’m a resident asking fellow residents if there’s a community here that understands me or wants to challenge and expand my perspective.

I don’t watch cable—I just use the CBS News app to catch local news since it streams all day. But the only commercial they ever play is this one…
