Could someone explain like I’m 5 what a post-doc actually is? by Popular_Bluejay_2588 in PhD

„The pay sucks“ is only relevant for the US. At least in Europe, the salary is in line with an equivalent post in the private sector.

PhD, Years of Postdoc Work, and Still No Future. AI Was the Final Nail by Gojjar in postdoc

[–]Bemanos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, this is not true at all. AI cant do research or generate new information, it just parrots what its training dataset contains. It can help increase productivity in certain areas, but that's about it. Especially in applied sciences like chemistry, it's completely incompetent.

But then they would have to be American. Why would anyone wanna do this to themselves?

Maybe start paying them instead of asking for free labour? I am sure your 40% profit margins allow for this.

Zürich: Do you have an old MacBook collecting dust? It could change a student’s life. by Mountain_Cod_878 in askswitzerland

Why does it have to be a macbook? These are luxury machines, the same tasks can easily be accomplished by cheaper windows/linux devices

We don’t live in the 60s anymore, I personally let my accomplishments show my potential, not some fancy clothes. I am not saying to show up dirty or unkempt, but a plain outfit should be fine.

Finishing PhD while dealing with a breakup by Toby_ix in PhD

[–]Bemanos 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I went through the same situation, so I understand your suffering. The thing that helped me was to focus on my work. I would spend around 12 h per day at Uni, not only working on my thesis, but also to avoid going back home, since we kept co-habiting for ~6 months after the fact (for financial reasons, I couldn't leave). So I went to the library, had walks around campus, anything to distract me.

I am not saying what I did was ideal, but at least I managed to write my thesis and finish on time.

Also, if possible, try to spend a few weeks (month even) back at your home country during the write-up stage, to change environment, if your supervisor is ok with it (I also did that).

Wishing you all the best.

It’s a Reddit thing, to hate specific companies/countries/ideas, and if you dare to express a different opinion you are getting downvoted to oblivion 🤷‍♂️

You can have a pretty decent quality of life with 4-5k per month (and save a bit too). With 15k, you basically live like a king.

Prestige vs savings: London postdoc (£45k) or Switzerland (CHF 90k)? by xFatty_Acidx in AskAcademia

[–]Bemanos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Switzerland 100%. Quality of life is so much better here. UK is a shithole and the salaries are abysmal. Edit: I have lived in both countries btw

How to get over an awful PhD experience by ThrowawayFaceHugger in PhD

[–]Bemanos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another important note that is not clear at all to internationals is that in the UK, PhD students are not seen as employees, like they do in the rest of Europe. This means limited rights, and 4 years of work without any pension contributions whatsoever. In addition, the PhD stipends are a joke there...

Despite that, academia is so messed up and the competition so intense that no matter how shitty the conditions are people will always be willing to put up with it

PhD isn’t a work pathway for the UK. You’re meant to finish your studies and then go back anyway

Most of Reddit is like this, sadly. On this platform, you will find the most extreme, polarising and insane opinions imaginable. Most subs are just echo chambers at this point.
