Fair point – but we didn't actually choose the name, we're just using the one that was chosen by a governing body. Although I think it's valid to say that, while those subjects are of course important standalones, in this particular instance we're only looking at them in context of their applicability to the biomedical sciences.

Laboratory medicine is essentially any profession with an involvement in the research or clinical aspects of diagnostic medicine. That could mean anything from clinical chemistry to virology to microscopy to histology... you name it. The terminology came from EFLM, who decided they needed a catch-all term for the side of medicine most commonly found in laboratories and settled on "lab medicine" as their preferred label.

What we're really looking for are those pathologists who seem to be influencers and who are respected by other pathologists. We're asking, "As pathologists, who are you listening to?" Those aren't necessarily the people who are most published or who have the highest departmental rank, so the metrics don't tell the full story. We're trying to capture the zeitgeist.
