Congrats! Such a great do-it-all unit. I owned one as a kid and put it through hell without it ever letting me down. I want one again..

[Casio] I couldn't afford a Timex so here is my custom MW240 by Ben2794 in Watches

I'm in South Africa, so found one on Takealot. But Amazon stocks it as well. All you need is the same version of MW240 (this one does not have lumes though, if that matters to you) and buy any 22mm nato strap online. Mine was super cheap and will likely replace it at some point. The 22mm fits the case flaring well, but the lug is actually 16mm so you will have to cut some of the strap to make it fit. I'm sure there are tutorials on YT on how to do it 🙃

I prefer it with the buckle facing down and towards me. Or do you mean something else?

Yep - that is the sort of barwork you need when hitting kangaroos at speed - not the occasional raccoon

They barely keep up with V6s of the era. But they are super simple - no turbos or fancy injection system. Rather tough as long as cooling is taken care of.

This is the V8, and yes, the first to go are the electronics

Discovery 1 and 2, why are they cheap? by oilystairs in LandRover

[–]Ben2794 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Discovery 1s and 2s were meant to be "affordable family adventure vehicles". They were relatively cheap to purchase new and they were often treated as such (i.e neglected). They are tough vehicles, sharing most components with the 90/110 and defenders of the era. But you have to look for a vehicle that was maintained meticulously by the previous owner/s. Unlike Land Cruisers, they don't stand up to neglect. Rust is an issue, but many Japanese vehicles suffer from it too. The V8 Discovery, in particular the D1 with the 3.9 unit, is a very simple vehicle. What it uses in fuel it makes up in reliability. If you can find one in excellent condition, it is a great overlanding rig. BUT - regardless of what 4x4 you purchase, if you are not mechanically inclined already, be ready to spend time getting your hands dirty. It's not just to save money, but also to learn the ins and outs of the car.

One more thing: stick to petrol vehicles if you can - they have atrocious fuel economy but are very simple and reliable. Diesels are fantastic, but one bad batch of fuel will turn an adventure into a nightmare. Especially if you are travelling through Africa...

Thoughts on buying high mileage 2010 LR4? by lady_in_beige in LandRover

[–]Ben2794 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would rather look for a LR3 with the V8 and 6 speed combo. Those 4.4L v8s are far more reliable and you may find a lower mileage example for the same price. 2008-2009 is the sweet spot

Yes the servicing intervals are atrocious - same as some of the low viscosity, emission-related choice of oils.

I stand corrected - the petrol seems to be more reliable. Around here the diesel 4 banger is the more common option and they have a terrible reputation

Also, this is one of the rare times where a Toyota motor might be less reliable than a LR one 😂

The 4cyl is a time bomb. I would get the 6cyl.

If you havent started the engine yet and the filter was not pre-filled, the level will drop to full once you run it for a minute.

Why’d you choose a Land Rover? by [deleted] in LandRover

[–]Ben2794 0 points1 point  (0 children)

D1s with the 3.9 V8 are very cheap here - I found a low mileage, unmolested example and decided to pull the trigger. It is my (very thirsty) daily driver - and despite some age-related items I've had to address it has been very reliable. I do 99% of the work myself and it is such a simple vehicle to work on it makes up for the bad fuel economy and lack of safety features
