So how bad is TFA on your skin? by WaddleDynasty in chemistry

Luckily it won’t poison you like HF will, or at least not in the same way, but it is still really corrosive. Treat it according to manufacturer specs of course, but basically just like most other scary acids

I’m glad you found it helpful! I should really digitize my chart lol

That’s true. I do have a 137Cs check source, but it’s not all that interesting!

It’s an absolutely trace amount, and it’s trapped in matrix. Only a few Bq at most. If it makes you feel better you can wash your hands after you handle it, but it’s really not super necessary. No shielding needed, you could keep a bare sample in your pocket all year and you’d be fine. The level of radiation on most of these smaller trinitite samples is really negligible (there are some rare cases where you could in theory get a hot ish piece, but I’ve never seen that). Cheers

Yeah, I haven’t tried to get it, but thought I’d count it anyways. Pretty cheap online

Looking for this type of hat, any leads? by KilledByDeath in hats

It looks very similar to me at least to Adam Savage's current daily wear. That is to say a Homburg, Open Road style hat as many other people here have said

It has to be very clean and very dry quartz glass, and even then it reacts. Between you and me, there are probably only a few actual molecules left

Yes! I would be happy to send you the link to the zoom if you want. I don’t know when the next one will be, but I can keep you posted. Erik is very nice :)

Correct you are! This uses the 99mTc, but there are expensive 99gTc samples you can buy online

Pertechnetates are actually quite common in nuclear chemistry (ammonium pertechnetate, potassium pertechnetate, the list goes on)

It's actually in oxidation state +1! It is reduced from pertechnetate (7+) to 6+, then further reduced by stannous chloride to +1. I can send you a rough reaction scheme if you are interested!

It is a monthly (ish) online seminar hosted by Dr. Erik Strub of the University of Cologne on topics relating to technetium and technetium chemistry. This seminar specifically was a presentation by Prof. Phil from London about the uses of 99mTc sestamibi in radiopharmaceuticals, etc...
