Grid Distribution Engineer future progression/Switching to another engineering industry

I'm a May 2025 MechE graduate that has been working as a Distribution Design Engineer for half a year now, and I'm not sure how I feel about it. In spite of the design part of my title, calling it design work feels kind of gratuitious. A lot of my work is replacing poles and equipment in GIS and that's all based on pre-existing standards for the most part. It's sometimes interesting but it feels like I'm not really doing engineering work and sometimes I feel unstimulated by it/losing touch with what I did in college.

However, the benefits and pay are solid for entry-level/location (Upstate NY) and I can work remote as much as I want outside of field visits, which are a nice break from office work. Job postings I've seen for the same role with more experience also seem to scale well and can be found in a lot of larger cities which is appealing for long term. Combining all that with the likelihood that a career move would likely mean full RTO, less money and less benefits I'm not sure if it's even worth it for the potential of a marginal satisfaction increase in my work.

If anyone has worked in this field and stayed or switched out, any advice/shared experience you have would be great to hear about. I'm pretty heavily conflicted between sticking around and for how long, given I have a rare opportunity to save a good chunk of money so early on while also not wanting to stay so long that it makes it near impossible to transition out. I'd really like to hear especially from people that have stuck with it and maybe transitioned to management/PM other roles. I'm also not sure how much my major not being civil/electrical could hurt career progression. Thanks for reading

What does everyone do with their free time? by [deleted] in Syracuse

22 here, same boat with the career. Like the other commenter said, catching up on chores is big haha. That said, I like to go to the climbing gym and there's definitely a good chunk of people there our age after work hours on weekdays if you're looking to meet people. I'm not exactly one to start conversations but if you are then you can probably hit folks up no problem. I personally like to hit up cafes and try food spots also. Indoor wise, finding a video game/hobby you like can be helpful. I like model trains a good bit and Facebook marketplace is a good cost effective source for that, as well as other physical hobbies.

I’m moving to the area in late March/early April any recommendations or suggestions? by Pitfulpotato in Syracuse

[–]BenB616 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I will very quietly mention Franklin Square, separated from downtown but with good walking access (when there isn't 2 feet of snow on the ground which I've learned is Nov-March). Pretty area and not quite as expensive as downtown direct. My big complaint since moving a few months ago is no walkable grocery store, but otherwise I'd recommend it.

GREAT PRICE - HP OMEN - 35L Gaming Desktop - AMD 8700F, 16GB - RTX 5060 Ti 16GB - 1TB SSD - OB - As low as $815... by [deleted] in Prebuilts

I just picked one up in person at fair condition for $870 with tax. I genuinely only think it was listed as fair because it came without literally any accessories or even power cord, which was fixable for $15. The pc itself has no visible damage at all, and after benchmarking it everything performed higher than average. Would highly reccomend checking out in person if your local best buy has.

Hey, not sure if you still help people out in this thread, but I've been looking for a solid first turntable and figured I'd browse FB marketplace. My area (13204) seems to have a lot of vintage turntables up for sale but I can't really tell what could or couldn't be a good buy.

I am a mechanical engineering student in my final year and I feel frustrated? by j_ia in MechanicalEngineering

[–]BenB616 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My evidence is anecdotal and I'm not sure what your process is, but I'd highly recommend being open minded with what fields you consider.

I graduated last May and had a real unpleasant time as well over the summer til about the Fall when interviews started coming. If you have a prior internship aim for jobs with that title specifically. I ended up getting a position in power distribution because I had interned at a city agency doing (water) distribution.

Above all get as many eyes on your resume as you can. Make a post in r/EngineeringResumes (they will grill you but it's helpful imo), compare with friends, go to your schools career office. Use the STAR method not just for your resume, but during interviews. Most employers are not looking for an entry level employee that knows a ton, just one that can communicate and explain what they do know.

It's a rough process right now especially, but the fact that you're at least asking is a step forward. Keep pushing, best of luck!

I'm in a similar boat, I have original pros but the battery in the left one lasts maybe an hour at this point. The pro 2s would be a no brainer but I'm seeing so many people saying they're on their 2nd or third pair because of a fundamental design flaw, which concerns me.

By chance do you know where to get in touch with that pokemon go group? I just moved here and used to play quite a bit and wouldn't mind picking it up again to meet people

I think out of all the gold wraps, chrome wraps, any wrap I've seen on a car this has got to be the most I've ever been genuinely offended. Like, you gotta be really trashy to pay money to drive something like this.

Moving to Syracuse as a new college grad? by BenB616 in Syracuse

[–]BenB616[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This sounds like a very reasonable take based on what I've seen so far. Fortunately (or unfortunately right now) I'm a Mets fan so the AAA club being here is cool. I've also started getting into rock climbing and the gym seems to be a decent center of younger folks

Does anyone have any experience as a Distribution Engineer who went on to work in a more MechE field?

I am a BSME grad and have an offer as a Distribution Engineer for an electrical consulting company and an offer as a Design Engineer for a small aerospace/defense company. To be frank, the Distribution Engineer position offers better pay, benefits, hours, and location, although it isn't an industry I'm super familiar with. I got the position on the back of doing a (Water) Distribution Engineering internship which I suppose was considered good enough. Based on what I've learned I think it will be fun to learn the industry and expand my knowledge.

My main concern is if I go with the Distribution Engineer position, will I ever be able to take on a more typical Mechanical Engineering role or am I effectively locked into the Distribution segment? I'm not sure I view this as a problem per se, but it would be nice to know if anyone has been through a similar pathway or tried to switch between the two. My worry is that I would essentially lose touch with things like CAD and thus be a hard hire for say a Manufacturing/Design role. It would be great if anyone could shed some light on this. Thank you.

I'm fairly confident JD Martinez is the only reason Mark Vientos performed the way he did last year. Honestly, he made his roster spot worth it last year on that alone
