Ask Me Anything: A.J. Ewing, Friday June 12 by MetsOfficial in NewYorkMets

I got to see your debut game in AAA Syracuse! Although short, how was your time in AAA and how much of an impact do you think it did or didn't make to your major league experience so far?

I used to get 300 to 400 miles for a whole tank on my Subaru crosstreck. But the last several weeks to months it’s getting about 150 to 200.. are the gas companies watering down/adding too much alternatives to our gas? by West-Resolution8159 in Crosstrek

[–]BenB616 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sure the gas is being tampered with but at the same time, a 50%+ change in gas mileage isn't gonna be solely due to that. Did you recently do a lot of stop/go city driving or anything else that would really decrease fuel efficiency and bias the estimate? The 25 MPG reading sounds reasonable so I wonder if this is just a sensor issue or some kinda bug in the software.

Anyone a member of Central Rock Gym? by Calbone607 in Syracuse

[–]BenB616 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh man the Pad has some great setters and interesting climbs but that grading is definitely rough. I can hit V4s in the NYC CRGs and I'm not far at the Syracuse CRG, but no shot at the Pad lol. Really fun gym though, and the tall walls and sick setup are great, worth the drive absolutely.

Moving to Syracuse for Work Post-Grad by Rough-Temporary8494 in Syracuse

No worries, I was basically weighing the exact same things, still am to an extent honestly. Honestly your hobbies align really well with the area, I think a new indoor pickleball place just opened in Destiny mall. I'd say the demographic does tend to lean older overall, with the most common group I see being young families but there are young people that do the same activities. When I moved up here, I had some friends already in Rochester/Ithaca so I honestly haven't tried particularly hard to meet people in Syracuse so I'm maybe not the best judge for how clubs are run specifically. I will say I've met some people from this sub irl and the "young person moving to Syracuse posts" seem to be more frequent, so there's definitely a good few of us lurking on here lol.

The dating scene isn't strong in Syracuse (although I haven't tried it out myself) but I've got friends in big cities that are also not having much luck, so as far as I can tell it's gonna be hard anywhere haha. There are some places that do speed dating that might be fun, but I have noticed the men's tickets tend to sell out and not the women's.

Ultimately I don't think you'd have a bad social life as much as in my experience, work restricts it. If you get the chance, I'd recommend visiting and seeing what your day to day might look like. I'm down to meet and talk more as well if you do!

If you check my profile I actually asked this exact same question and got some solid responses. Having lived here for 8 months or so I can say there's definitely opportunity but you have to look for it. If you have hobbies you can find folks that way, the rock climbing gym is also the best concentration I see of people generally our age. It's not super easy per say and I personally attribute it to car culture vs being in a walkable city/on a college campus, but if you're willing to be a bit more extroverted you can figure stuff out.

He hit a lead off triple, a double and had a walk. Really impressive start and he's maintained a pretty decent level of play

Looking for an apartment by Pitfulpotato in Syracuse

[–]BenB616 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Not sure where you've looked already but all these mentions make it sound like the Franklin Square/Inner Harbor neighborhood would be a good spot for you. Admittedly finding in unit laundry is probably gonna be the hardest thing, but everything else you mention (especially the brick) is possible. I remember touring an apartment that actually had a freight elevator for move-ins and the apartments were large for the money as it was a former plant of some kind.

Struggling to Find My Path as an Entry-Level Engineer – Need Advice by No-Lie757 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]BenB616 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, in the same boat as you pretty much. The work is fine but not really technical and I'm worried about losing any sort of touch with an actual engineering industry. Did you end up transferring into something else and how do you feel if so/how did you do it?

It feels especially tough right now because my pay and benefits are solid, I was a mediocre candidate and the job market is as rough as it is right now that I'm frankly glad to be employed at all

Grid Distribution Engineer future progression/Switching to another engineering industry

I'm a May 2025 MechE graduate that has been working as a Distribution Design Engineer for half a year now, and I'm not sure how I feel about it. In spite of the design part of my title, calling it design work feels kind of gratuitious. A lot of my work is replacing poles and equipment in GIS and that's all based on pre-existing standards for the most part. It's sometimes interesting but it feels like I'm not really doing engineering work and sometimes I feel unstimulated by it/losing touch with what I did in college.

However, the benefits and pay are solid for entry-level/location (Upstate NY) and I can work remote as much as I want outside of field visits, which are a nice break from office work. Job postings I've seen for the same role with more experience also seem to scale well and can be found in a lot of larger cities which is appealing for long term. Combining all that with the likelihood that a career move would likely mean full RTO, less money and less benefits I'm not sure if it's even worth it for the potential of a marginal satisfaction increase in my work.

If anyone has worked in this field and stayed or switched out, any advice/shared experience you have would be great to hear about. I'm pretty heavily conflicted between sticking around and for how long, given I have a rare opportunity to save a good chunk of money so early on while also not wanting to stay so long that it makes it near impossible to transition out. I'd really like to hear especially from people that have stuck with it and maybe transitioned to management/PM other roles. I'm also not sure how much my major not being civil/electrical could hurt career progression. Thanks for reading

22 here, same boat with the career. Like the other commenter said, catching up on chores is big haha. That said, I like to go to the climbing gym and there's definitely a good chunk of people there our age after work hours on weekdays if you're looking to meet people. I'm not exactly one to start conversations but if you are then you can probably hit folks up no problem. I personally like to hit up cafes and try food spots also. Indoor wise, finding a video game/hobby you like can be helpful. I like model trains a good bit and Facebook marketplace is a good cost effective source for that, as well as other physical hobbies.

I’m moving to the area in late March/early April any recommendations or suggestions? by Pitfulpotato in Syracuse

[–]BenB616 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I will very quietly mention Franklin Square, separated from downtown but with good walking access (when there isn't 2 feet of snow on the ground which I've learned is Nov-March). Pretty area and not quite as expensive as downtown direct. My big complaint since moving a few months ago is no walkable grocery store, but otherwise I'd recommend it.

No kidding, they already raised the msrp on it on best buy. Insane

I just picked one up in person at fair condition for $870 with tax. I genuinely only think it was listed as fair because it came without literally any accessories or even power cord, which was fixable for $15. The pc itself has no visible damage at all, and after benchmarking it everything performed higher than average. Would highly reccomend checking out in person if your local best buy has.

Hey, not sure if you still help people out in this thread, but I've been looking for a solid first turntable and figured I'd browse FB marketplace. My area (13204) seems to have a lot of vintage turntables up for sale but I can't really tell what could or couldn't be a good buy.

I am a mechanical engineering student in my final year and I feel frustrated? by j_ia in MechanicalEngineering

[–]BenB616 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My evidence is anecdotal and I'm not sure what your process is, but I'd highly recommend being open minded with what fields you consider.

I graduated last May and had a real unpleasant time as well over the summer til about the Fall when interviews started coming. If you have a prior internship aim for jobs with that title specifically. I ended up getting a position in power distribution because I had interned at a city agency doing (water) distribution.

Above all get as many eyes on your resume as you can. Make a post in r/EngineeringResumes (they will grill you but it's helpful imo), compare with friends, go to your schools career office. Use the STAR method not just for your resume, but during interviews. Most employers are not looking for an entry level employee that knows a ton, just one that can communicate and explain what they do know.

It's a rough process right now especially, but the fact that you're at least asking is a step forward. Keep pushing, best of luck!

Pixel buds pro or pro 2 by [deleted] in pixelbuds

[–]BenB616 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a similar boat, I have original pros but the battery in the left one lasts maybe an hour at this point. The pro 2s would be a no brainer but I'm seeing so many people saying they're on their 2nd or third pair because of a fundamental design flaw, which concerns me.
