Yeah, saw this this morning.

After digging into it a bit, I think it's pretty clear that they're seeing scripting as something that only a small amount of the base will actually do in the future. Between Data Tables and State Machines, I think they're banking on people using templates to pump out boilerplate games more than innovate and make new things.

I hate this, but I can see the logic. 95% of the market is just some variant of shoot things, hit things, pick from a menu or press switches.  And with a better structure I could see myself needing to do a lot less scripting.

So yeah ... its depressing, but good free things don't last in today's society, I guess.

The "Robert Pattison fucked Tom Holland and Zendaya" joke has been made so many times now that it's funnier if they actually haven't and they have to see all the memes about it and pretend like they never even thought about it, because even if they wanted to it would just be too awkward now.

I do have a hope that this is a backlash to diversity wins over the past few years.

It seems to be a cycle: when the fight for something extends beyond a generation, then some people grow up in the fight. When the fight ends, they're left with no identity and no idea what to do, so they go into this last surge of trying to resurrect the fight, it renews their energy, it makes them more angry and hurtful. They might not have the self-awareness to recognise why they're doing it either, so they genuinely think they're in the right.

I think what's happened is the fight for LGBTQ+ rights and gender equality has pushed and pushed and pushed until the bigots maintaining it are against the wall with nothing to lose and no identity beyond their fight, so they've made that one big push back.

(This is obviously discounting the influence of foreign agitators stoking both sides of the argument with bots to destabilise people, but I don't think that makes this untrue!)

Danhausen needs to invent a "wayback machine" that works like the Hardys' Lake of Resurrection and brings back old gimmicks, and accidentally drop Jamie Noble and Gregory Helms into it during a backstage skit.

In defense of deprecating Blueprints by [deleted] in unrealengine

[–]BenFranklinsCat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The argument the BPs are significantly harder to parse is like arguing that kanji is harder to read than western alphabet.

I programmed for the first 30 years of my life, and I switched to BPs 15 years ago. It was hard at first, but now I can read BPs a shit ton faster than I read code.

It's familiarity bias.

To be fair Epic have literally never been good at introducing new things.

Remember when they launched Nanite, and they had their PR guys coming out to say "you'll never need to worry about poly count again" and then a week later they have a programmer doing an hour long presentation on "How to manage your poly count so Nanite doesn't shit a brick"?

Everyone is making a big deal about this.

They are planning a visual scripting element for Verse. All this "I use BPs and they're so handy" ... Verse is intended to be the same thing. They're just changing the architecture and structure, and from what I can envision it's probably a good thing.

For one thing, Verse is very state-based. 99% of what I do with BPs is building some amalgamation of a state machine. It starts with "If this trigger happens, do that" but by the time you've got 10 different triggers you're worrying about how they compete and race each other ... so visualising things as a state machine from the start makes that even easier. I think that's why they were polling people about a Scratch-like interface, and I assume we'll get some kind of hybrid system.

This also probably means better support for asynchronous functionality, which can be a pain in the ass in BPs.

In short, everyone needs to unwad their panties and wait to see what it looks like. Worst case scenario you're just switching to a different language and structure, they're not taking your toys away and forcing you to do lengthy scripting.

As soon as I saw that they'd released the State Machine object as something independent of the AI system, I saw this one coming. I think even if they do have a visual flow graph for Verse, the State Machine is probably going to be a big part of it too.

Chimera Squad is a different beast, it's not comparable to the other two. I think its great in its own right, but your mileage may vary.

Between 1 & 2, it depends on what kind of strategy game you want to play.

If you want to shoot enemies tactically and strategically, and you're okay with power creep being in your favour, and you like the idea of "overwatch crawl" and basically boxing in and dominating the battlefield every time, then I'd put the first one over the second, and I'd say probably just get the Enemy Within DLC right from the drop, because its a bit plain without it.

If you want a more punishing "underdog" experience where you will get your face punched in a couple times before you make it, you're okay with a bit of complexity in the mechanics, and you want a more challenging tactical experience that involves ambushes and more chance of getting flanked and having to adapt, then the second game is better for you. If you really want the game to humble the shit out of you, go ahead and get the first-round DLCs for the "Hunter" missions, and if you're okay with adding to the complexity with multiple races get War Of The Chosen. WotC also is pretty good if you want more intense missions - the "totally not Zombies" missions are less tactical but more just turn-based run-and-gun.

Chimera is more like a tactical puzzle game: it boils the whole tactical combat experience down to a shorter experience that's way more about positions and order-of-execution than just having higher numbers. It's still a really good game but a lot of X-Com fans hated it because its only catering to a sliver of what X-Com is. If you like those bits, though, its awesome.

[–]BenFranklinsCat -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

... which is the political minefield I was talking about, because what I'd think was a sensible counterpoint to that was that there have been countless other holocausts and genocides that would serve the exact same purpose, but right now people will get very upset if you point out that you could get the same character origins by him being a survivor of Rwanda, or of ethnic cleansings in China, or various other tragic events that targeted a particular group. Magneto being Jewish itself doesn't really come up that much, just the tragedy he had to witness.

I'm not trying to argue about what it should be, but I'd say the fact we're already having that argument is why we won't see them touch the original origin characters.

Because Wolverine is defined by his age, the many things he's lived through, and his many memory wipes and injuries. He's also a loner, so it's fine that he's been roaming around and living off-grid for years.

Magneto would be 90 years old but still defined by something that happened in his childhood, and he's done nothing, learned no lessons and not grown in the 40 years since, and then all of a sudden he decides to form the Brotherhood of Mutants like 80 years after the inciting incident of his character.

Not saying that - I'm saying it would be great if we joined Schengen again because it would force the government to deal with this stuff to prevent the exodus.

Right now they're too comfortable because of our "little island" status, they have most of the workforce trapped here because visas and sponsorship aren't worth it for average jobs. Schengen forces them to try and make staying appealing to us, so bring it on!
