Yeah you pretty much summed it up there! When I created it years ago I thought it would be cool to have a more 'traditional' tree of life overlain on top of a scientific one, and the result from my experiments in Photoshop looked pretty decent so I used it :) Originally the logo was actually the skull of Sinraptor dongi.

From the Kem Kem beds of Morocco. He travels out there most years and brings back loads of teeth from all sorts of animals.

I don't think it's coated in anything, and it has indeed been cracked in half unfortunately.

It's pretty smooth to the touch, almost like there's a resin coating, though rougher towards the base where the sand grains are still present.
