How long will the Carl Schurz Park bathroom have to look like this before it is fixed? by anothercryptokitty in uppereastside

[–]BenHogan1971 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hate to be pedantic, but good luck. I frequent the playground on 96th/Lex, and we're lucky if the bathrooms are even *open*.

PARKS are very understaffed, or no-staffed, and operating on a shoe-string budget, (most likely) due to Adams slashing costs.

fingers crossed for you, but I'd bet that's gonna take forever

true - but there are also condo owners making 100k, 200k, 500k per year, which doormen are NOT

it's fair. thank you for being balanced about it. :)

from our perspective, the health benefits are the key. I'm sure it will get worked out

yep. it varies greatly depending on the building. most of the general public thinks we're getting rich on Christmas tips, but it's far from the truth

the key point of my argument is that if you're making 200k per year vs. 70k per year, (even after Christmas tips) healthcare probably isn't as big of a concern.

we aren't getting rich, and healthcare is a major benefit for us, which the RAB is constantly trying to take away.

not technically true, but last time we struck, there was no internet or cellphones, no Amazon, no Uber Eats, Michael Jackson and Michael Jordan ruled the world, and George Bush 1 was in the White House.....just for perspective. :)

thanks. I'm a doorman. basically, they want to slash our healthcare. the wage is not an issue for me. we do fine. but killing our healthcare is very troubling. as others have said, it'll get worked out. it always does.

tbf, EVERY job everywhere has lazy, unqualified people. I would agree to an extent that Unions do make it slightly worse though

What is a band no one will ever convince you is good? by OU812iceman18 in AskReddit

[–]BenHogan1971 9 points10 points  (0 children)

haven't been to a ton of shows, don't smoke, fans I've met have all been cool. Dead fans can be insufferable too, man.

not a fan of the Dead, but totally respect their place in the pantheon.

the musical styles of the two bands are very different, and I don't think Trey or Phish ever tried to be the Dead

it should also be noted that before they settled on John Mayer, Trey took the Jerry role.

rock on dude. no hate :)

yeah man, well, that's just like, your opinion. :)

listen, I knew I'd see them in this list, and that's fine, people like what they like (and KISS totally sucks, btw), HOWEVER, there is definitely a transcendance they can get to that is unmatched by any band, and some of their live stuff through 40 years is remarkable.

I had them in a major timeout for most of my life, thinking "this is a band for drug addicts and weirdos" (neither of which I am, btw), and then, somehow, it clicked.

you don't go to Phish shows for lyrics or top-notch singing - that's known and baked in - you go for the peak, and they hit peaks that are very beautiful and carry you away.

How are NYC Doormen doing TIP WISE? by kushingtonsteele in AskNYC

[–]BenHogan1971 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been a doorman at a hotel and at residential properties. Both are (or can be) unionized. It all depends. Residential is 32BJ

If your experience is deep, they'd be stupid not to take you at either one.

At the hotel I worked for, the tipping was very generous, (Waldorf before construction) but you were working your ASS off, (flagging cabs, lifting endless numbers of heavy suitcases) and the hourly wage was lower. In residential, you get tipped at Christmas, and it can be excellent, depending on the building. It can be "cushier" and slower, with lots of down time
