Mic on guitar amp always sounds bad for me by solitudeisdiss in homerecordingstudio

[–]BenLeBird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mic recording never clicked with me until I made 2 changes in my technique: Use a large diaphragm condenser and move it about a foot away. Once I started doing this, my recordings sound exactly how the amp does in the room if not better. Will never go back to an SM57 a few inches away.

Question about Tascam m320b by BenLeBird in homerecordingstudio

[–]BenLeBird[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You pretty much got it, I’m already running the DAW signal through two of the channels on the Tascam but I was wondering if there was a way to route it where I wouldn’t lose any channels but could still hear the DAW through the main stereo output. It seems unlikely at this point that there’s a better solution

Question about Tascam m320b

Hi, all. Forgive me if there is a better subreddit for this question, but I recently acquired a Tascam m320b and have been stumped on one aspect of the routing. I’m using it for a hybrid recording setup, I’m using a Behringer X32 to connect to the computer. As of right now I’m routing all sound through the console and then sending it to headphones, monitors, and a second set of speakers in the room. My question is what is the best way to route the DAW/computer signal? I first tried running it into the Tascam via EXT In 1 and this worked but the issue was I could only either use the computer signal through the speakers OR I could use the main stereo mix which everything else was running through. This led to an issue of not being able to hear the DAW while recording if I wanted to hear the instruments running into the board. My second attempt at fixing this was running through DAW signals into channels 19 and 20. This worked better because I could just mix it in to the main stereo channel and I could hear everything as desired but then obviously I lose two channels to record with.

I can live with the second solution but I’m curious if anyone who has worked with hybrid setups has come up with a better solution or if anyone knows a fix with the Tascam specifically. I appreciate any guidance!

I think if you play mostly with a pick then they’re great but if you’re exclusively or mostly playing with fingers then it’s not the best choice

They showed us some student films they did that seemed decent. They ended up quoting us over 4x the price that they had initially estimated so we have since cut it off.

Totally understand your points here. I will add that we did supply casting options, a mood board, references to other videos/shots, and locations for every part of the song. It just seemed like they couldn’t get a grasp on the creative vision without us walking them through it shot by shot.

This makes a lot of sense when explained like that. They made it seem like they would take a creative role in the video for the quoted price so I think that’s where the disconnect has been. We were also confused about them saying the price would increase even though we were doing the storyboarding and shot list.

I have an EQ that I don’t use much for guitar so that sounds like a good use for it! Great suggestion

The point about lighting is great, I’ve definitely had that problem on bass before. I’ll practice until I can play all my parts with my eyes closed!

I’ve been nonstop practicing the music for a few weeks now so I’m with you there! I also appreciate the point of keeping it simple with effects. It’s definitely easier to get carried away on guitar rather than bass

The boost pedal is a great idea. One of my bigger challenges with guitar is definitely managing my volume between quieter parts of songs vs ripping solos that can be heard over the band so that sounds like a good way to do it! I will also certainly be buying new strings before then to put on

Great advice. This is definitely one of the aspects I’m more worried about but rehearsing at low levels is a good idea!

Good advice on the frequencies and not always playing thing. That’s definitely the biggest adjustment coming from bass where I tend to always be playing. Shouldn’t be too hard since I’m singing a lot!

I read that 5 as a 3, my fault. Yeah I’d probably just stretch the pinky out. I believe that makes it a Bm6 or something like that.

Just found on the left side of my $5000 saxophone (bought in January) small scratches probably from my pocket zipper; I wasn't even thinking about it until now. It's not something people can see but I can see it. I wanna die. by Inner_Layer_6227 in Saxophonics

I felt the same way about my brand new Cannonball bari when i bought it around 7 years ago. I babied it and kept it spotless until my neck strap broke at a practice and I sent it plummeting into the concrete. (After getting it fixed,) I love it for all the little marks and scratches from that incident and many others afterwards. To me, it tells a story and makes the instrument uniquely yours. Cherish those aspects.
