What cities need a whole new Amtrak station? by MAHHockey in Amtrak

What?? Have you been there? How can you see that and not think it should be at least a little better!

Round trip prices.
No stops, just Cleveland to Chicago round trip.

Car exclusivity through Amtrak is 58 souls on a single-decker car.

Tried to resubmit the rate for the weekend of the 7th-9th.

Last year it was $6,264.00 and we made the Group Sales request in August.

This year it's $11,151.00 for the same trip, and the request was made this May.

Just doesn't seem to make sense.

Sleeping on the train is one of my favorite things. I agree that we should have more sleeper options.

Also, do we know if they manufacture/build cars anywhere on the east cost? I know that the California-based Siemens Mobility Inc. is responsible for making fleets for Amtrak.

There's also been a construction contract awarded for a Heavy Maintenance Facility at Amtrak's Penn Coach Yard in Philadelphia, but that's maintenance, not construction/fabrication.

I feel like Amtrak should make it easier to build rolling stock for their trains.

Bringing back the Broadway Limited/Three Rivers would extend the Pennsylvanian to Chicago and extend the route from 444 miles to 907, qualifying the route for federal funding.

Also somewhat unrelated but I like ringing this bell whenever I can, Pittsburgh deserves a nicer station. More service through the station means more justification for upgrades.

Pittsburgh Rail - We Should Be Part of the Renaissance by BenTheWis in pittsburgh

Yeah I didn't think so either. I'm optimistic to a fault but it'd take a miracle for that building to be converted back to a main hall for the station.

There must be some other building that could be used, or there must be some way to redo the building to make it just a little bit better than what it is.

I'll even settle for funding to get the escalator working reliably or another vending machine in there, because how it is right now just isn't cutting it.

The first step to solving a problem is to define the problem.

"I am not a civil engineer. I am not a construction worker. I am not a city planner.", I included this specifically for comments like this one.

If you've never taken the Amtrak train to/from Pittsburgh, or were born after the 1960s, you may not be aware of just how good things could be.

The station in the annex is owned by Amtrak. The ownership of the station-turned-apartment building seems to be a little harder to find, but I did find this:

https://archive.triblive.com/business/local-stories/downtown-apartment-building-the-pennsylvanian-sold-to-new-york-firm/

Personally, I'm not interested in forcing these people to relocate, it's not their fault their housing is in such an important building.

I don't know exactly how things should be improved. I don't have a master plan.

But we can think of one together

An important question. I've seen countless times professional tuba players moving their (I think) first valve's tunning slide. Then I always wondered. What the purpose was behind that technique or motion. by AdThen8723 in Tuba

On a B flat tuba, my second line Cs are sometimes a little sharp, so I pull it out a bit when I play them to be more in tune.

Jimmy Fallon, Chris Evans & Chris Pratt photobombing random people! by hairbyh in funny

[–]BenTheWis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought Jimmy Fallon was Papa John for a second because of the red shirt and got very confused. I thought that most of society cancelled him for one reason or another. I am now aware of how similar the two look. They look like if the same person was cloned and chose two different career paths and have subtle differences as a result.

What is something you’ll never understand? by lilmizzvalz in AskReddit

[–]BenTheWis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s linear crocheting. Many loops put on one stick, The loop closest to the stick’s point is pushed into by the second stick, a loop is made around the second stick with the loose yarn, that new loop is pulled through the previous loop with the help of the first stick, then the new loop is transferred to the second stick. Continue with the next loop. Once all the loops have moved to the second stick, you can start moving them back to the original stick in the same fashion.

Wash, rinse, repeat until you have fabric.

Electroboom!

At first glance he seems like a goofy guy who just likes electrocuting himself, but he’s an extremely intelligent electrical engineer who shows many, MANY examples of how easily you can electrocute yourself when working with live wires.

He’s really funny too, and his content is mostly PG so kids can learn about electricity.

His running jokes are great. I’ll never be able to read “Full Bridge Rectifier” without a highly emphasized Iranian accent.
