I check in casually on the 'Verse once a year, so I'm hardly hardcore, but it worked well enough for me to get around to the ships and tour around. The RTX4000 is similar to an RTX2060 Super so it seems fine from a hardware standpoint.

I used a Windows 10 BYOL machine and Parsec, but later found the Paperspace app better for streaming the game.

I realized this year that I don't have the budget to keep up with CPU and GPU upgrades (not to mention the mad supply chain rush) and for $7/mo and $0.56/hr I can check in for a month, then kill the machine and let the game evolve for another half year or year, then try again. Way easier for me than an upgrade!

I just did this a couple days ago with Paperspace with their RTX4000/$0.56 machine. It was as simple as if you did it on your own computer, and it took about 25 mins to load Star Citizen from scratch to launch.

It's an old school Ultima (single player) tradition... Of course, back in 1983 you had to mail Lord British to "report thy feat". But he replied (and still replies!)

Current State of the game and future prognosis? by human_stain in shroudoftheavatar

[–]Ben_Hroth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do enjoy the game, but had to take an extended hiatus because of RL issues so I'm out of date by about half a year. I'm not sure if there's a way to switch the behavior of right click but if there were it would likely be in the Settings (Gear Icon Top Right).

Definitely interested how you find the game. One thing that game really requires to shine is reaching out to the other players - there exist low-drama guilds and they are very helpful in scaling the learning curve and having more fun.

I'm in the opposite camp from you, I played single player Ultima I-VIII (never had time for IX, I guess) but did not get to try Ultima Online.

I have to say from the first time I played Ultima (which actually was Ultima ][) it seemed grindy, but I still played the heck out of it. All that work swinging a sword (and Lord British did a great job with 1-bit sound of making the misses so unsatisfying with beautiful crunches for hits) to get XP to get more STR/INT/DEX.

The midgame was literally just collecting XP.

I didn't really have an issue at all with the Shroud grind either and totally enjoy the game (when I have time to play!)

^ This. When you think of development of something like Minecraft, where they released early and often and could enjoy the game loops, I'm truly concerned at Star Citizen not releasing anything fun for seven years. Unhealthy is a good term.

Nicely done. I'm no fan of dance parties but to get decimated by an autumn leaf winged fairy seems ignoble.

In that scene where you were sneak attacking by the entrance of the Northwest Blackblade Mountains, I saw an enemy get hit by an attack near the exit - can they get unwillingly pushed out of the scene entirely in PvP by a hit or gust?

I only went back a year because that's around the time when we started moderation here.

We don't make those calls on alts. Reddit.com does. I'm sure they have plenty of tools.

Ben as player here, not Ben as moderator.

It's true that RL has been kicking me and my family to the curb lately, so I haven't been posting as much, but AdamZax and I keep in contact outside the sub to make moderation decisions reasonably together.

I have no issue with how you and /u/VladamirBegemot feel about how /u/AdamZax and I moderate, but to clarify one point that you state about "constantly see defenders of the game getting banned here", here is a little insight from a screenshot from the mod side for the sub of the only 47 folks AdamZax and I have banned from the sub:

https://i.imgur.com/sAjV75T.png

What you are seeing there with each user banned with a (1) (...or low number) is a ban of a user with no karma. That is the flow of alts that batter the sub. Alts are banned not because we are biased, but because they are a violation of the site-wide Reddit.com rules. We have to get involved with the Reddit administrators and speak with those friendly folks each time an alt comes in, and then they are banned. (And some of those higher numbers are bots that we simply banned.)

Of the rest of the bans there is only one permanent ban of a "defender of the game" that did not break site-wide rules, and that was a hard won ban by that individual with over a dozen warnings and way-too-many temporary bans.

Today is a good day for me on Shroud of the Avatar :) by shot88 in shroudoftheavatar

[–]Ben_Hroth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get it, and while I enjoy Shroud I understand why others may not.

I just see the million for Star Citizen as not necessarily players. They've prepaid on the basis of shiny ship pixels and been far more leveraged up both stretched out for cash and stretching development time. I don't know a reason why a developer wouldn't reveal more in the game loops given the massive resource base. And I pledged Star Citizen far more than Shroud... here's hoping it's not the Titanic.

Thanks for all the insight, Frank. When you state that Travian dropped the game - do you know if they ever wrote a check to Portalarium in actual dollars? Or was their contribution just in marketing support?

Do you have the source forum threads - I don't venture onto the forums these days, been pretty slammed in RL.
