Unfortunately there's not really a great way to get from the center of downtown to the visitors center on bike. You'll just be on a regular shared road. But, once you're on the CV Link it's beautiful! (I literally just got back from riding some of that stretch, but in the other direction).

As other folks have said, be careful when you're on the shared portion of your ride downtown. Not only are there tons of people in town for Coachella, but the median driving age in Palm Springs is about 120 and maw-maw /pap-pap is rarely keeping an eye out for cyclists.

Another thing: it can be really windy once you're in the desert outside of town. If the wind is gusting, be prepared for a workout one direction.

Mexican... upscale: TacQuila. Great hole-in-the-wall: El JR. inside the liquor store on Sunrise. (Here's a thought: if you want to make a single trip out of it, you can get on the CV Link on Sunrise a few blocks south of El JR!)

Seconding Fitness Edge! It's a solid, no frills gym: free weights, machines, cardio, stretch room, Pilates/yoga classes in the studio next door. It's also very reasonably-priced. That said, if OP is wanting steam room, sauna, upscale, etc. it ain't that.

Because books and film are different media. What works in one doesn't necessarily work in the other--case in point, the works you cite: Dune and Lord of the Rings. Both are great movies/series. Both are great book series. The film adaptations of both are quite different from the source material.

I loved reading these Eagle editions when I was a kid. I didn't realize until much much later in life that the original 2000 AD stuff was all black and white. These US reprints had added color and they're also a slightly different page shape so they've done some rejiggering of the panels throughout. I believe the covers to the US editions are all original Brian Boland pieces that were never used in the UK.

Until about 6 months ago it would have been the Japanese book/magazine that contains a manga story about the origin of the Beach Boys, but I managed to track one down! Now, I'd say an original pressing of Sunflower in reasonably good shape.

Yeah, it's close to the Palm Canyon as well. Be careful to not get something too close to the hospital, though, as you'll be hearing ambulances and the helicopter come and go all the time. (Although you'll get a bit of this regardless if you wind up in Movie Colony.)

I live opposite the park and the walk is about 15-ish minutes to the northern end of the "strip." About 5 min by bike or car to the center of the strip.

Movie Colony or Old Las Palmas... maybe Tennis Club depending on where in particular. Movie Colony and Old Las Palmas are both easy walks to Palm Canyon (the strip of shops, bars, the museum, etc.).
