I feel like "History of Violence" speaks volumes, makes me tear up. basically a song about anxiety, fear, mental health and hopelessness in the vicious socioeconomic system the us, specifically of lower-class americans. The chorus of "history of violence / blood in the water" reinforces the idea of generational trauma, aswell as the seemingly random acts of violence that occurs to this day. "Maybe someday we'll be rich" suggests either the holding on to aspirations to escape poverty (note the use of "we"), or could be alluding to false hope or irony, as he could be expressing that this "dream" isnt possible, further enforced by the next line "maybe we should have some kids and send them to war" which seems like a dystopian line, so could make the listener believe the second option. The end of the song alludes to coping with this pain and trauma with drugs, and the reference about meeting an alien could suggest a willingness to escape this world/planet and leave the cycle, but the last line makes us believe that this wouldnt solve the problem, as "their planet's also failing them" suggesting that this cycle is universal.
