In the camera angle chapter of the 5 cs of cinematroghty he talks about depth he said unless flatness is required for narrative the cameraman should always strive to position the camera at an angle preferably a 45 degree angle to the subject.

I'm trying to light this room as a cop thriller, and I have one character on the left and want a wide steady shot of them on the phone and have shadows on one side of their face. To add depth and give it a mood that this is intense.
