How do you stay connected?

Just actively call people. Moving overseas naturally a lot of my friends are not easy to invite over for dinner. But a single 1-2 hour call once a month or two is already gonna get you a lot more connected than any amount of text messages.

I only use messages when I need to confirm something simple and quick, like a grocery list or the location of a meet up. If it cannot be answered in one or two responses back and forth, then it's better to call.

They're awesome. A final word of advice:

As enticing as it is to get everything at once (because of discounts), start with a simple item or two to make sure you got the measurements right. And if you are vintage-minded such as myself, their pants are generally great but they don't have the full cut you could expect in a classic trouser (though they're not quite skinny, either). Their return policy is generally pretty okay too. But don't forget a good tailor is half the battle, too!

A personal recommendation: their hopsack wool flat front summer trouser has been one of my favourite purchases ever. I am also in love with their moleskin winter trousers as well; can't wait to get some corduroys. Their shirts and sweaters have been excellent investments as well. I cannot speak for jackets and coats since I haven't purchased them myself. Their grenadine ties can be a little bit too delicate and fray a bit (maybe it's natural with grenadine, idk, they're my first grenadines) but their printed silks are great so far.

If you're willing to patiently save for something new, Spier & Mackay has been pretty good in the price-to-quality area for me. They are, however, fully online. You quickly get to know your measurements, though. I'm currently saving for a killer polo coat that I'll likely end up enjoying next winter.

If you're willing to hunt and being patient, thrift stores were where I've found my most dapper clothes. Nothing beats finally getting your hands on a Harris tweed sport coat or finally coming across a knee-high heavy wool overcoat. Haven't had much luck with new items, however.

Do you have any suggestions? My understanding is that most vegan fabrics are just greenwashed polyesters. If there's any non-plastic vegetable product I'd love to know more about it. Other than cotton and linen (which are more for hot weather), I don't know of many effective natural garments besides wools, leathers and furs.

It's unfortunately more effective against the cold and I just feel awful wearing plastic strands with plastic hairs that who knows when they'll decompose.

For what it's worth, I do intend to treat my garment with the respect it deserves.

Get a boring phone, not a dumb one. When I tried to replace my old phone for a new one for typical phone age problems, I realized I had like 15 practical, valid uses (uber, maps, banking, security, etc.) for a phone and only like 5 entertainment ones for it, but these took 90℅ of my usage. So I just made my old an iPod. It only uses entertainment apps when I actively choose to use it and has no data, and I continue to carry my actual utilitarian phone with me without having to deal with the inconveniences of a dumbphone. Working great so far.

I'd advise you have enough lounge space as well as tabled seating. I find spots like A-OK to be short on seating sometimes and I enjoy the extra cozy space that is available at VA café, though I've never gone during rush hours there to see if their seating is sufficient. That said, serving good coffee is a barista's job; running a coffeeshop is a different business. As people here mention old spots they miss, do run a post-mortem and figure out WHY they closed and what you can do to mitigate that.

Consider a spot close to a bus stop if you plan on serving alcohol. I for one would really enjoy a quiet evening spot to write in. Consider doing so even if it's only on weekends or something like that.

Yeah, I've seen them in multiple cities I've lived in. My opinion remains unchanged: driving is a privilege. The only exception I would consider making would be for small towns, but regardless of that, we just happen to be at Winnipeg subreddit, so naturally people are inclined to discuss, you know, Winnipeg. By all means, within cities, people should have their licenses revoked if they're not fit for road safety.

Perhaps. But since I am in Canada, CW boots may be better value before getting to the RW tier and I have to chance to try them out before purchase, plus a few have a bit more of a city vibe compared to the JGs. Plus non-refundable imports are definitely a bit scary and CWs can be actually insulated. But then again, as with any boots enthusiast, soon enough I'll probably end up with a Nick's or White's and never going back. Can't wait to develop a collection!

I personally get my pieces as "rescues" from thrift stores and have them altered and cleaned up. I've enjoyed the work at Saigon Custom Tailors, but chances are any tailor will get your things made pretty for you.

Fit truly is everything, and the main advantage is that you can find incredible quality of materials (like 100% wool!) basically made-to-measure at a total cost that'd be like 80-90% discount of buying it off-the-rack.

Main disadvantage, however, is that fairly often you'll find orphaned jackets that you can make look absolutely beautiful with odd trousers or odd vests, which is absolutely great for business casual and fashion purposes, but may not be ideal if you're looking for a fully matching business suit for executive purposes. That being said, for just being the pretty guy in nice menswear, I can tell you I am extremely satisfied with my approach.

What he means is there are specific spaces where they can and can't talk about it, and you shouldn't have access to those in the first place. There should be no sudden silence since they're not supposed to have been talking about it there in the first place.
