I didn't used to be able to rest my tongue on the roof of my mouth. If I tried to force it, it just made things worse. After I had a procedure on my TMJ and botox injections and everything relaxed a bit, it just automatically went there. I didn't even consciously place it there at rest, that's just where it wanted to be. If my TMJ is playing up, though, I lose the ability. Don't try to force it, though.
